AMD Ryzen 5 4500U vs Intel Core i5-10210U – Ryzen 5 demolishes Core i5 with 27% more CPU and 133% more GPU power

Today we have a comparison of the popular boys. On the Red side of the table, there is the Ryzen 5 4500U – a processor that poises to become one of the best deals in 2020, while on the Blue side – there is the Core i5-10210U. Some say, that the latter is a bit of a letdown. After two years of continuity, all Intel needed to do was to deliver a great piece of CPU for the masses. Instead, they released the Ice Lake lineup, as well as the budget Comet Lake. Let’s say it was a safety shot from the Blue company in case the main CPUs fail to deliver. However, it is barely a teeny tiny refresh of the two-year-old Kaby Lake-R. Change is needed in the Intel bastion ASAP.

Quick specs

While the Intel Core i5-10210U is built on the well known 14nm architecture, AMD was quick to introduce the 7nm node to the mobile world. Although the Ryzen 5 4500U has two cores more than its competitor (6 to 4), due to its lack of hyperthreading, it has two threads less (6 to 8). However, it has 8MB of cache, compared to 6MB for the Intel counterpart, and it has a significantly higher Base clock (2.30 GHz to 1.60 GHz), despite having a lower maximum boost – (4.00 GHz to 4.20 GHz). Interestingly, they share the same TDP, as well as its up and down values. On the other side, though, the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U supports memory with significantly higher frequencies.

In terms of graphics power, the Ryzen 5 4500U is equipped with the so-called AMD Radeon Graphics, which, as we saw in the comparison between this CPU and the Ryzen 5 3500U, provides a noticeable improvement over the last generation. Then, we look at the Blue team and we see that the Comet Lake processors didn’t receive the Iris Plus Graphics treatment as their Ice Lake cousins. Instead, the Core i5-10210U has a slightly improved version of the old Intel UHD Graphics 620.

Verdict

Here is your answer – the Ryzen 5 4500U is around 25% faster in CPU-intensive tasks and has a two times faster iGPU than the Core i5-10210U. That’s it. Given the price similarity of the devices equipped with these two products, there is just no point in going for the Core i5-10210U. And while the Core i5-10210U is a decent office chip, its competitor can provide enough performance for professional usage, and even light gaming, without being configured with a dedicated graphics card.
