[Comparison] Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (10th Gen, 2022) vs X1 Carbon (9th Gen, 2021) – what are the differences?

The X1 series is undoubtedly the crown jewel in ThinkPad’s crown, which is, in turn, the brand that solidified Lenovo’s place in the corporate laptop market.

Their devices have been some of the best, providing efficiency, performance, stability, and security, which are essential in the business field.

The X1 sub-brand offers the most premium of ThinkPads, which utilize premium materials like aluminum, titanium, carbon fiber, leather, and are constantly on the lookout for the next big thing in laptop design.

The X1 Carbon presents a light and powerful series of notebooks, with the latest hardware from Intel. Today we are comparing the 10th Gen X1 Carbon against its predecessor, to see what are the differences.

For starters, we have to take a look at the design, where we see no noticeable changes. The laptop still comes with a black exterior that uses carbon fiber for the lid and magnesium alloy for the base, resulting in some of the lightest 14-inch notebooks on the market. There is an optional Carbon fiber weave cover for the lid, otherwise, the material comes painted in black. As always with Lenovo products, branding is limited, with a ThinkPad X1 logo and small Lenovo wordmarks on the lid and base.

The display choices from the Gen 9 laptop are available on Gen 10 as well, along with an additional IPS panel with a 2.2K resolution.

In terms of hardware, the Tiger lake U-series processors, which kicked Intel back into relevance and provided good performance and power efficiency are replaced by Alder Lake U-series and P-series chips. They have a TDP cap of 15W and 28W, respectively.

The U-series bring more Efficiency than Performance cores, which might be a problem if they have to perform heavily. With the laptop bringing both U-series and P-series chips, Lenovo also needs to provide good cooling, to satisfy the needs of both in a laptop of this size.

The GPU choices stay the same with the Iris Xe Graphics G7 being available on both. These are great for productivity on the go while also having enough performance for some light and casual gaming.
