NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 (6GB GDDR6) vs NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 (8GB GDDR5)

We continue with our GPU comparisons today with a different one. We’re going to look at the lower tier RTX 2060 (6GB GDDR6) compare to the higher tier, but older, GTX 1070 (8GB GDDR5).

You can have a look at our Top Laptop Graphics Ranking to see these cards and even more.

Specs overview

Comparing these two cards is an interesting story. Though different tiers, the new RTX 2060 is a good competitor to the GTX 1070. It boasts 6GB of the new and fast GDDR6 memory compared to the 8GB GRRD5 of the GTX. And it has a lower power consumption – 90W compared to 120W. But the RTX falls behind in terms of clock speed and core count. The clock speed on the RTX is 960 MHz – 1200 MHz (boost) compared to 1442 MHz – 1645 Mhz (boost). The core count is relatively similar – 1920 and 2048 respectively.

Benchmarks

GTX 1070 seems to outperform the RTX 2060 by 14-15% in most of the tests, except for the Unigine Superposition benchmark. This is mainly because the number of light sources Unigine Superposition uses, explaining the advantage of the Ray-tracing enabled GPU.

Gaming tests

In real life gaming, though, the performance difference between the two is a lot smaller. Plus, it depends on the game you play, as with some titles the RTX 2060 is able to match the performance of its competitor.

Conclusion

Interestingly enough, despite the win of the GeForce GTX 1070, we would recommend the GeForce RTX 2060 for a couple of reasons – first, the difference between the two depends on the game you play and 50% of the times it is less than a few fps. Next, there is the TDP – less input power = less heat = thinner chassis.
