[Stability and Temperature Comparison] ASUS ROG Strix G15 G513 vs ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE (GX551)

Cooling is a big part of a gaming laptop. After all, you can have all the computing power in the world, but without proper heat management, you’ll be doomed to fail. Today we will compare the cooling setups of two hardcore gaming laptops.

On one side we have the ASUS ROG Strix G15 G513, which was one of the best gaming laptops of 2021 for its price. It brings very good hardware and a 300Hz display, which is fantastic in games. We are putting the Zephyrus Duo 15 SE against it, which is the incarnation of innovation. It has a secondary display, which improves the cooling, by allowing for a full vent to be present below it.

Today we are comparing the cooling, stability, and temperatures of the ASUS ROG Strix G15 G513 and the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE (GX551).

Cooling

The laptops use similar cooling solutions, with the G15 packing an extra heat pipe. It has one shared heat pipe, with two more for the CPU and GPU each. The sixth heat pipe is for the VRMs and graphics memory.

On the Zephyrus Duo, we have two shared heat pipes between the processor and graphics, with one more for each of them. The last fifth heat pipe is there to keep the VRM modules and memory in check.

Temperatures and comfort

Max CPU load

AMD Ryzen 7 5800H (45W TDP)0:02 – 0:10 sec0:15 – 0:30 sec10:00 – 15:00 min
ASUS ROG Strix G15 G5133.44 GHz (B+8%) @ 68°C3.37 GHz (B+5%) @ 72°C3.44 GHz (B+8%) @ 74°C
ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE (GX551)3.93 GHz (B+23%) @ 81°C3.82 GHz (B+19%) @ 86°C3.78 GHz (B+18%) @ 93°C

As you can see, the Zephyrus laptop allows its CPU to reach higher clock speeds, at the expense of temperatures, which are quite high, albeit within the reasonable amount, especially when you keep in mind that this is a stress test, which uses 100% of the CPU’s power, so it is common to see such temperatures.

Real-life gaming

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070GPU frequency/ Core temp (after 2 min)GPU frequency/ Core temp (after 30 min)
ASUS ROG Strix G15 G5131632 MHz @ 84°C @ 130W1617 MHz @ 86°C @ 128W
ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE (GX551)1689 MHz @ 71°C @ 131W1676 MHz @ 72°C @ 129W

Once again, the Zephyrus Duo showcases that it can get more from its hardware, reaching higher clock speeds, while keeping the temperatures significantly lower.

Gaming comfort

Both laptops manage to keep a warm outside temperature, with the Strix G15 being slightly cooler.

Conclusion

The additional vent that the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE (GX551) has comes quite in handy. It manages to help the cooling deliver much more fresh and cold air to the system, which is very important, as you saw in the results above. If however, you don’t fancy the secondary display and want a regular gaming laptop with this new vent design, you can take a look at the ASUS ROG Zephyrus S17 GX703.
