Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP214-41): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP214-41)

1. I/O

The laptop has decently-wide I/O, with a total of three USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, one USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, an SD card reader, an Ethernet connector, HDMI and VGA connectors, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

2. Upgradeability

In terms of upgradeability, you get really good coverage for its size, offering two SODIMM slots, one M.2 NVMe drives, and space for a 2.5-inch SATA drive for SSDs or HDDs.

3. Display quality

The 14-inch Full HD IPS panel doesn’t offer professional-grade color accuracy or coverage but is fantastic for day-to-day use, offering comfortable viewing angles, and a max brightness of 266 nits in the middle of the screen and 250 nits average across the surface with a maximum deviation of 8%. The contrast ratio is also quite good – 1470:1.

The panel also shows no usage of PWM across all brightness levels, which is essential for a panel to be considered safe to use for prolonged periods of time.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

4. Battery life

The laptop comes with a 54.6Wh battery unit, which is a balanced number, as it keeps the laptop light, but also offers a big enough capacity for the U-series CPUs. The battery lasts for 11 hours and 7 minutes of Web browsing, or 10 hours of video playback. The way we conduct our tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

1 reason NOT to buy the Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP214-41)

1. Design and build quality

The laptop comes with an entirely plastic build, which is totally fine for an affordable laptop. It also looks decent, offering minimal branding and a black exterior that has a textured lid and base. Unfortunately, the lid doesn’t open with one hand and it is a tad more flexible than we would have wanted. The base is flexible as well, especially the area around the keyboard. You will feel it bending a bit if your typing style is a bit harsh.

The input devices aren’t fantastic either, with the keyboard offering short key travel and numb feedback. The touchpad on the other end feels good, with a smooth gliding surface and decent accuracy for a budget laptop.
