Dynabook Tecra A50-J: Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the Dynabook Tecra A50-J

1. Upgradeability

The laptop offers a great level of upgradeability, with two SODIMM RAM slots, which should extend the lifespan of the device for a while. The slots also work in dual-channel mode. For storage, there is a single M.2 PCIe x4 drive, and with M.2 SSDs going down in price, you can get large capacity drives for decent prices.

Here is our teardown video, which shows how to access both the RAM and SSD slots.

2. I/O

The I/O has great coverage with two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, one of which also works even while the notebook is off, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.0 port, a MicroSD card reader, an Ethernet port, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

3. Battery life

With a 53Wh battery unit, the laptop delivers 11 hours and 7 minutes of Web browsing, or 8 hours and 10 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

4. Performance

In terms of hardware, the device offers five CPU choices with the Core i3-1115G4, Core i5-1135G7, Core i5-1145G7, Core i7-1165G7, or Core i7-1185G7. We tested the version with the Core i5-1135G7, which performed admirably and pretty much matched every other laptop with the same CPU.

The CPU sports the Iris Xe Graphics G7 with 80 Execution Units. It performs really well in the benchmarks that we tested, even outmatching the 96EU version.

1 reason NOT to buy the Dynabook Tecra A50-J

1. Display quality

Lastly, the Full HD IPS panel does more than fine for daily use and office work, featuring good brightness uniformity and contrast ratio, while also not using PWM across all brightness levels, making the panel safe for prolonged periods of use. The negatives about it are mainly in the lack of full or near full sRGB coverage and adequate color accuracy. The panel offers 56% sRGB coverage.

In our accuracy tests, the display measured a dE value of 5.7 with the factory settings, which dropped down to 3.1 with our Design and Gaming profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.
