4 reasons to buy ASUS ROG Strix GL702VI

1. Generally sturdy build

The build quality of ASUS ROG Strix GL702VI is definitely not bad – for the asking price you get a brushed aluminum lid and all-plastic base. Moreover, we didn’t notice any inconsistencies and protruding or sharp edges. The keyboard area, as well as the palm rest, are resistant to bending and the lid also didn’t give in to our twisting attempts.

2. Lighter than the competition by at least 1 kg

As far as connectivity is concerned, the ASUS ROG Strix GL702VI boasts a fairly low weight – the scale tips at just 3.24 kg making the laptop the lightest GTX 1080-powered we’ve come across. It even beats gaming beasts such as MSI’s TITAN PRO, Acer’s Predator 17 X and Alienware’s 17 R4 by around 1 kg.

3. Excellent IPS display with merits such as wide sRGB, high contrast, 120Hz refresh rate, G-Sync support, etc. (+ lack of PWM)

The laptop sports one of the best gaming-oriented displays we’ve seen – the Full HD (1920×1080) IPS panel supports G-Sync and 120 Hz refresh rate. What’s more, thanks to the good maximum brightness of 316 nits, exceptionally high contrast ratio – 1400:1 and 90% sRGB coverage the screen is ideal not only for gaming but also for multimedia purposes. And the good news doesn’t end here – you don’t have to worry about PWM as it is absent across all brightness levels. We also recommend installing our custom profiles that further improve the color accuracy.

4. Good cooling performance

We were also impressed by the cooling performance – the airflow is efficient enough for the hardware and the internal temperatures are within the normal. Even during our extreme stress tests both the CPU and the GPU remained pretty cool.

1 reason NOT to buy ASUS ROG Strix GL702VI

1. Short battery life

Quite expectedly, the 88Wh battery unit doesn’t manage to deliver good runtimes. This is due to the fact that NVIDIA’s G-Sync feature still doesn’t support switchable graphics so the GTX 1080 has to handle both the heavy and the undemanding tasks. You can squeeze just 45 minutes for gaming away from a power source.

The best competitors

Other similar gaming alternatives include MSI Titan ProAlienware 17 R4 and Acer Predator 17 X so you can check these bad boys out if you still haven’t made up your mind on what gaming device to go for.
