Intel Core i7-1065G7 vs i7-8565U – equal CPU performance but the Ice Lake one has much better iGPU

Intel Ice Lake CPUs are here and they are bringing new features to the table like 10nm tech process (finally, Intel moved away from 14nm). The other new stuff is the new Intel Iris Plus Graphics. Core i7-1065G7 has Iris Plus Graphics G7 which is the fastest in its lineup. Core i7-8565U is based on the Whiskey Lake architecture and has the well-known Intel UHD 630.

So, let’s clash those CPUs.

Quick Specs

Core i7-1065G7 is a bit more expensive, but the difference is only $15 bulk price ($426.00 to $409.00). Both CPUs have 4 cores and 8 threads. Core i7-1065G7 has a bit lower base and boost frequencies compared to i7-8565U (1.30 – 3.90 GHz to 1.80 – 4.60 GHz). The cache size is the same for the two contenders – 8 MB. The TDP levels are close, only the TDP-down value of i7-1065G7 is 2W higher maybe because of the new integrated graphics. Ice Lake CPU has far better memory frequencies DDR4-3200; LPDDR4-2133 while i7-8565U has much more stellar specs here – DDR4-2400, LPDDR3-2133.

CPU Benchmarks

The difference here is 1% only. It’s a clear neck-a-neck situation.

Results are from the Cinebench 20 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)

Results are from our Photoshop benchmark test (the lower the score, the better)

GPU Benchmarks

Intel Iris Plus G7 is 45% faster than the UHD 620. The new Intel IGP is a really capable one.

Verdict

CPUs like Core i7-1065G7 bring the progress – it was about time for a new technology process. The pros of the new tech are clearly visible – i7-1065G7 has the same performance as i7-8565U but don’t forget the fact that i7-1065G7 has a lower base and boost frequencies. So, the new tech process and the higher memory frequencies are a good combo for more CPU power. At the same time, 10nm CPU will have better efficiency.

Don’t get us wrong, the i7-8565U is a good CPU, its performance is enough for every-day tasks like MS Office, or browsing with tons of opened tabs but its iGPU is really slow. With Intel Iris Plus G7 you can play CS:GO with a decent frame rate (on medium preset) while UHD 620 will struggle much more.

Intel Core i7-1065G7 costs $15 more but it is a good investment because it is the more modern CPU with better graphics.

“Don’t get us wrong, the i7-8565U is a good CPU, its performance is enough for every-day tasks like MS Office.” LOL a 2007 duo chip can do that. I think the 8565U is just a tad more capable than running office.
