Intel Core i7-1065G7 vs i7-9850H – the Coffee Lake CPU is more powerful and even cheaper

The Core i7-1065G7 is definitely “the boss” when it comes to a powerful new-gen CPU. It’s rocking 10nm tech and an Intel Iris Plus G7 iGPU. The i7-9850H looks like an old mastodon next to its Ice lake brother. The 14nm Coffee Lake CPU has a lot of raw CPU power and a not-so-new UHD 630.

It will be a fast new-gen CPU vs old-school CPU with brutal power. Let’s check it out.

Quick Specs

Intel is asking $426 for the i7-1065G7 and $395 for i7-9850H – hm, a 12-thread CPU is 8% cheaper than the i7-1065G7.

The Core i7-1065G7 has fewer cores and threads when compared to i7-9850H (4/8 vs 6/12). It also has lower base and boost frequencies than the Coffeе Lake contender (1.30 GHz – 3.90 GHz to 2.60 GHz – 4.60 GHz). The Ice Lake CPU has 4MB smaller cache size too. It looks like the battle with the i7-9850H will be a tough one. The i7-1065G7 has an advantage with its supported memory frequencies – DDR4-3200, LPDDR4-3733 and we have DDR4-2666, LPDDR3-2133 for i7-9850H.

CPU Benchmarks

More than expected, the i7-9850H is 29% faster when it comes to raw CPU power.

Results are from the Cinebench 20 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)

Results are from our Photoshop benchmark test (the lower the score, the better)

GPU Benchmarks

The i7-1065G7 definitely has something up in its sleeve and that is the Intel Iris Plus G7. This iGPU is 44% faster than UHD 630.

Verdict

Let’s make a quick summarize – the i7-1065G7 is 8% more expensive than i7-9850H, it’s 22% slower in computing workloads but the iGPU inside of it is 44% faster than the one in i7-9850H. It’s not an easy choice.

You will find the i7-1065G7 in much thinner and lighter machines compared to the ones configured with the i7-9850H. The Ice Lake CPU dissipates much less heat and that’s why it can be fitted in laptops with thin profiles. The performance of the i7-1065G7 isn’t bad but the i7-9850H is much faster and even cheaper. If you don’t care about graphics performance the Coffeе Lake CPU will be a good choice, especially if you need it for photo and video editing. Keep in mind that around 95% of the laptops with i7-9850H are with dedicated GPU.

If you need a good balance between CPU and iGPU power the i7-1065G7 will serve you well – it’s not that power-hungry like the i7-9850H, the CPU performance is more than enough for every-day stuff like Web browsing, YouТube videos or editing office documents, and the Intel Iris G7 is a superb iGPU which is much faster than the UHD 630. Of course, a laptop with this CPU will be (probably) a thin and light machine that is comfortable for outside usage.
