ASUS ROG GL504 (SCAR II / Hero II) – disassembly, internal photos, and upgrade options

The GL504 is the most recent masterpiece by ASUS. Because of the new HyperCool Pro technology we simply couldn’t wait to get inside it.

Check out all ASUS ROG GL504 prices and configurations in our Specs System or read more in our In-depth Review.

1. Removing the bottom plate

We were delighted to see that the GL504 was way easier to open, as we still remember how tedious it was to open the GL503. You need to unscrew the 12 screws and carefully remove the bottom panel using a credit card or something similar, but be careful because the two screws at the two front edges of the bottom are different from the other nine.

2. Memory

The GL504 has two DDR4 slots with a supported frequency of 2666Mhz. Once you have removed the backplate the slots are exposed.

3. Battery and Storage

This laptop boasts a 66Wh battery (you can read more in our detailed review), which compared to the previous model isn’t that much of a difference. Removing the battery is probably the hardest part of the whole laptop disassembly. You have to unscrew the five screws and carefully remove the connector, we would suggest a flathead screwdriver and some patience.

Right next to the battery is the 2.5″ HDD/SSD slot and on top is the M.2 slot with PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe support (M-key). Our laptop featured a Toshiba THNSN5256GPU7 PCIe NVMe SSD (you can see if your laptop is m.2 SSD compatible in our SSD compatibility list)

4. Cooling system

As usual, the CPU/GPU are both connected to the same heat pipe and each chip has a fan of its own. We didn’t see anything unusual, so we assume that HyperCool Pro is an ASUS secret. The process of changing the thermal paste will be easy, all you need to do is unscrew the screws holding the heat pipes and carefully remove the heatsink.

Thanks for the review it is a great help! I had a question about my Hero 2. I have a GL504GM-WH71. It came with 1 256 SSD and no HDD. I’ve been told this model has no HDD slots and only one SSD slot that can only be upgraded to a 512. Is it possible that it does have a HDD or is it possible that it would take a 1TB SDD? Thanks again for the article!

I have found a HDD Slot underneath where the SSD is installed. Trying to figure out where I can purchase this HDD ribbon so I can install my HDD.

Did you work out how to add the HDD? I have a Strix 2 with 512SSD and want to add a second HD like you do.

I’ve bought my GL504 with M.2 drive only and got that SATA3 ribbon and screws extra along with other things in box with my laptop.

I have an extra hard drive from my ps4 its a 500gb drive and i was wondering if i can put that into this laptop.
It’s a 2.5 inch so it is the right size for laptops but i don’t want to open it up to find nothing.

Hey All, I know this thread is a year old, but I just attempted this myself and couldn’t find a single answered forum question. I figured it out, and thought I would share. My GL504G came with a small plastic bag of parts with partition where the warranty documentation was in. Included in that bag was a SATA cable with a tiny ribbon. Under the chip based SSD there is a tiny HDD module that should have screen printing on it. I removed the SSD, since it was only one screw, because I could see the HDD module much easier… Read more »

Hey, Scott. Thank you for sharing this solution for GL504G. I have a same one. But when I open the back shell and see the empty slot there, I nearly believe that this model do not have sata support in design. I had totally forget about that gear in the bag. Your post saved me bro. Cheers.

I’m not Dan but i did end up taking apart the laptop and finding a spot where you can put a HDD. If you know your way a computer relatively then you should be fine in figuring out where everything goes. Hope this helps! (my experience is just a computer class i took this year in high school where we took apart computers and put them back together for like a week)

Would of liked to see how you got that credit card in the seem, which is why I watched video in first place. Obviously don’t need so much time showing removal of screws!!! Your head was in the way. I found that I could pry it up a bit with a tiny screwdriver enough to get a credit card in the now slightly separated seem.

Hello, is there a way to remove one fan(GPU) for cleaning without taking apart the whole cooling system?

Hello.. I want to ask about 15 mm Harddisk, can this laptop support it?
I want to buy 4 TB 2,5 Harddisk, but it’s 15 mm. I’ve been trying to find any info about this, but can’t find any.

About screws. There are 3 types of screws. 2 small ones in corners, 4 mid size and 6 slightly longer. If you put the longer ones in middle holes you crack your keyboard. so be careful!
