ASUS Vivobook 16X (M1603): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the ASUS Vivobook 16X (M1603)

1. Design and build quality

Vivobooks always look good, while having designs and features that are more than just pretty, which we really appreciate. The 16X, in its effort to save money, uses an all-plastic chassis. It’s still built fairly well and while there’s some flex from both the lid and the base, we’ve seen much worse. What’s more important is that it leads to some weight saving as well, as the Vivobook clocks in at just 1.88 kg, despite being a 16-inch machine. The laptop is pretty thin as well, with a profile of 19.9 mm. The surface of the laptop has been treated with an antibacterial cover, keeping it safe from all types of microorganisms.

The lid of the laptop doesn’t open with one hand, but that doesn’t stop the base from having a lot of goodies. The top bezel of the lid has an HD webcam with a privacy shutter. The keyboard is great as well, with large keycaps, a NumPad, long key travel, and clicky feedback. The touchpad has a very large size and a smooth surface. It’s fast and accurate.

2. Upgradeability

The upgradeability of the laptop isn’t that good, however, we’re still happy to see one SODIMM slot accompanying the 8GB of soldered DDR4 memory. For storage, there’s one M.2 slot, which runs at Gen 4 speeds.

Here’s our teardown video, which shows how to access both the RAM and SSD slots.

3. Battery life

The 50Wh battery pack pairs well with the Ryzen 7 5800H, lasting for 9 hours and 49 minutes of Web browsing, or 8 hours and 12 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

4. Performance

CPU benchmarks

The Ryzen 7 5800H is a lot more powerful in 3D Rendering than the Core i7-1260P while being more efficient, which is a big win for AMD, especially if AMD can keep the price down. The Core i7 does have faster Photoshop scores, however, but the difference isn’t as big.

Results are from the Cinebench R23 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)
