4 reasons to buy Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-42, Radeon RX 560X)

1. Easy storage upgrade

Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-42) boasts 128 GB SSD and 2TB hard drive for your multimedia and other content. The present SSD is a Kingston-made M.2 SATA drive that reaches mediocre Read/ Write speeds of 484.1 MB/s and 388.5 MB/s respectively, however, the SSD may vary depending on the region.

2. No PWM-adjustment for all brightness levels

Another merit of the device is its PWM-free panel. Not only does the Full HD (1920×1080) IPS display offer good viewing angles and an excellent contrast ratio of 1180:1, but it also doesn’t use PWM for regulating screen brightness across all luminance levels, making it safe to use in this regard. You can read more about that in our dedicated article on PWM. Of course, you could also install our custom profiles that take things to a whole new level in terms of color accuracy, white balance, and gamma.

3. Cool and relatively quiet under high load

The notebook also features an efficient cooling design thanks to which under extreme workloads the temperatures on the inside remain cool for a gaming laptop – for instance, the average temperature of the CPU was 56°C. Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that the fans of the Nitro 5 were nearly inaudible at all times.

4. Good battery life for a gaming device

Acer Nitro 5 also offers an excellent battery life for non-graphics intensive work. For example, the 50.8-Wh unit provides 6 hours and 36 minutes away from a power outlet for both web browsing and video playback.

In order to simulate real-life conditions, we used our own script for automatic web browsing through over 70 websites.

For every test like this, we use the same video in HD.

We use F1 2017’s built-in benchmark on loop in order to simulate real-life gaming.

1 reason NOT to buy Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-42, Radeon RX 560X)

1. Dim display while battery-powered

Although the maximum brightness is pretty reasonable while plugged in, we cannot say the same when used off the charger – the maximum luminance, in this case, is a letdown. However, you could also install our custom profiles that take things to a whole new level in terms of color accuracy, white balance, and gamma.
