Dell Vostro 5480 first impressions – thin, light and stylish business notebook

Dell released the Vostro 5480 a while ago on the Asian market and a few weeks ago it was also made available on the European market. We now have the device with us and we would like to give you a brief first look. The Vostro 5480 can be considered a direct successor to the Vostro 5470, released last year, it has nearly identical design and specs to its predecessor with some slight changes and refinements.

Design

Dell have kept the aluminum lid from the previous generation and you have a choice between silver and red brushed metal look. There is the usual Dell logo in the center and some microphone holes at the top. Unfortunately the finish of the lid attracts fingerprints pretty easily.

On the inside we have a 14-inch with the usual webcam and microphone on top. The palm rest is made out of brushed aluminum, with a big trackpad in the middle and a fingerprint scanner to the right, while the material used around the island-style keyboard is soft-touch plastic.

The sides of the device are slightly chamfered towards the front, where the speakers are located, while the back side is reserved for the dual-fan cooling system. The bottom of the device is a whole plastic piece with additional venting holes for use with a cooling pad, there are also holes for the speakers on the front left and right edges and a subwoofer grill on the left for the 2.1 sound system.

Hardware

Dell have not changed a lot from the Vostro 5470, rather they just refreshed the notebook with the latest available hardware. There is now a choice between a 4-gen Intel Core i3-4005U or 5-th gen Core i5-5200U or i7-5500U CPU, 4 or 8 GB DDR3 1600 MHz RAM, integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400/5500 or a discrete NVIDIA GeForce 830M 2GB GPU. Storage options include up to 1TB HDD or a 128GB SSD in the 2.5” slot, with no M.2 SATA slot.

Connectivity options include 3 x USB 3.0 ports (one with Power Share), combo audio jack, HDMI, Ethernet LAN port, and a card reader around the sides. More on connectivity we have Wireless 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0 and a gigabit LAN cards. The 14” screen comes with a 1366 x 768 HD TN panel with touch (glossy) or non-touch (matte) options. The battery inside is a 3-cell Lithium Ion one with 48.6 and 51.2Wh variants.
