Quick look at Sony Xperia XZ – first impressions, camera, performance

This summer we published subsequently the reviews of Sony Xperia XA, X, and X Performance. Some time after their publication the Japanese company announced two new models belonging to this lineup – Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact. The first  can be considered as the current Sony flagship is now available for some markets and this means that we are working on this model’s detailed review. Before this, however, we’ve prepared a short article with our first impressions of this new product.

Sony has kept the well-known shape which allows for comfortable and reliable grip. Additionally, the construction is made of metal and this can be felt when you grab the pleasantly cool smartphone body with your hand. The back, however, is prone to fingerprints. Another small drawback is the placement of the volume controls, positioned on the side toward the bottom. Above them is the Power button which carries an integrated fingerprint scanner. The profile thickness is 8.1mm and the weight – 161 grams. Last but not least, the phone is also water-resistant with an IP68 certificate (up to 1m and for as long as 30 minutes).

Xperia XZ comes with a 5.2-inch display, a tad bigger than Xperia X and Xperia X Performace. As far as resolution is concerned, it has been preserved – Full HD. Also present are the Triluminos and X-Reality technologies which ensure beautiful images with vibrant colors. The display menu offers several other modes which can also improve image quality and bring additional features.

As a real flagship, the smartphone integrates the best from Qualcomm. The available mobile chip is Snapdragon 820, it has two Kryo cores ticking at up to 2.15 GHz, and another two (up to 1.6 GHz). This combined with the Adreno 530 GPU and 3GB of RAM can’t but lead to high performance. The first two tests that we conducted confirm this. You can expect more benchmark results and comparison with competitive models in the coming review.

Xperia XZ features Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow but this is surely going to be one of the first models to receive an Android 7.0 Nougat update. Other than that, the Sony UI is also available and it brings a number of pre-installed apps and some extra features.

What’s more, the phone’s main camera is 23MP with f/2.0 aperture, laser autofocus, and an LED flash – jus like the one in Xperia X and X Performance. The camera menu is also the same with the only exception being the 4K video recording capabilities. We would like to present to your attention the first test shots we managed to take with Xperia XZ.

In comparison to the above-mentioned models, this one now has a USB Type-C, which is combined with the Quick Charge 3.0 technology that ensures faster battery charging. It (the battery) is actually a tad bigger – 2900 mAh, so we can expect higher durability.
