[Specs and Info] ThinkPads are on the rise again, as Lenovo adds the new Ryzen 5000 U-series chips to the ThinkPad E14 and E15 Gen 3

While the ThinkBook brand has been getting more of Lenovo’s attention, it is completely how it should be. The ThinkBook brand is very new and needs the support of Lenovo, in order to properly cement itself in the market as a true contender. Despite that, the ThinkPad brand has been going strong, with Lenovo releasing the new E14 and E15 (Gen 3, AMD). They haven’t changed a lot on the outside, but under the hood, you will find the Ryzen 5000 U-series and Vega graphics, which make for a portable and powerful daily driver.

Without further ado, here is our quick overview of the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 (Gen 3, AMD) and E15 (Gen 3, AMD).

Design

In terms of the design, there are some visual differences between the two devices, but otherwise, they look awfully similar to their respective predecessors. The ThinkPad E14 comes with two build materials configurations, either an aluminum lid with a plastic body, or a full plastic build. The plastic build weighs slightly more (about a 50g difference). The E15 offers only an aluminum lid and a plastic body with a weight of 1.70 kg, which is the better choice between the two. The keyboard on the E15 spans the entire area of the base and features a NumPad, while on the E14, the unit is situated on an “island”. Branding, as always, is kept to a minimum, with the ThinkPad logo being visible on the lid itself and the base, while the Lenovo wordmark is only found on the corner of the lid.

Display

The display choices are identical between the E14 and E15, except for the diagonal, of course, with the E14 getting 14-inch panels, while the E15 gets 15.6-inch displays. The base configuration comes with a Full HD TN display, which we wouldn’t recommend, as it has poor viewing angles, a rather low contrast ratio of 500:1. Fortunately, it has a max brightness of 250 nits, which isn’t bad at all. The second display also offers Full HD resolution, but uses an IPS panel, with 300 nits max brightness, much better viewing angles, and a way higher contrast ratio of either 800:1 or 1200:1.

Specifications and features

For the CPU and iGPU, there are a lot of choices. The ThinkBook E14 and E15 come with a total of five processors to choose from, all part of the Ryzen 5000 U-series. However, you have to beware, that some of these processors are actually the older, Zen 2-based chips, with a slight tune to the clock speeds. We are talking about the Ryzen 3 5300U, the Ryzen 5 5500U, and the Ryzen 7 5700U. The rest of the bunch comes with the brand new Zen 3 architecture. For the iGPUs, you get either the RX Vega 6, 7, or 8 (R4000/5000, 15W).

As with all ThinkPads, you get a spill-resistant keyboard with an LED backlight and a Mylar-covered touchpad, which offers smooth gliding and accurate tracking. The laptops also come with a stereo speaker setup with Dolby Audio support and a 720p camera with a privacy shutter and an optional IR face recognition sensor.
