日本We are going to see the first GDDR6 memory in 2017, faster than GRRD5X?
Are we going to see GDDR6 graphics memory by the end of the year? It looks like it’s going to be a good year for us the consumers judging by the recent announces of 3D XPoint by Intel and Micron and HBM2 by SK Hynix andSamsung. Micron recently announced that it is intending to start manufacturing GDDR6 memory in the second half of 2017 which is far sooner than expected.
Micron claims that the reason which stands behind the faster preparations for manufacturing the new memory is the raising interest in e-sports and gaming which they think that it shortens the upgrade cycle from five to three years. The company’s prognosis is that the e-sport market will expand to 500 million by 2020.
If you are not familiar with GDDR6 that’s the successor of the GDDR5 memory which is found in most modern graphics cards. The bandwidth is twice as much as in the previous generation – 16 Gb/s per die. It’s also faster than the GDDR5X memory found in the GeForce GTX 1080 and it will consume 20% less energy which is ideal for the laptop enthusiasts. For comparison, the HBM2 memory which is found in the new Quadro graphics cards by NVIDIA provides 256GB/s per stack and up to 1TB/s with four stacks connected to the graphics chip.
Maybe we will see HBM2 and HBM3 memory in the future high-end graphics cards while GDDR6 will be used in mid and low-end products, only time will tell.
