ASUS ROG GL703VD, GL703VM + SCAR Edition – what are the differences?

Recently, we took an in-depth look at ASUS’ GL503 laptop lines, showing you all the specs and differences between them. Since there are 7 types of GL503, many users were left confused and it looks like we’ve stumbled upon the same case with its bigger sibling GL703. Even the folks who support the official site of ASUS “changed their minds” several times, not being sure whether the Taiwanese company will launch a VS version of the 17.3-inch gaming notebook. Well, our latest info says that the “GL703VS” project is ditched for now and you’ll have to choose between GTX 1050 (VD) and GTX 1060 (VM).

Anyway, the GPU isn’t the only difference at all and just like in the story with GL503, ASUS has prepared a special SCAR edition for the 17-incher (GL703 Hero Edition won’t be available for now).

So, let’s get straight into the specs. Just as the traditional GL703, the GL703 SCAR Edition can be divided to two variants – GL703VD and GL703VM. Of course, the most important difference is the GPU – VD means GTX 1050 and VM means GTX 1060. This is well known, though, but what’s not well known is that there are three display options. Two for the traditional versions – Full HD IPS 60Hz (25 ms) and Full HD IPS 120 Hz (25 ms), and one for the SCAR Edition – Full HD TN 120 Hz (5 ms). The latter panel has pretty fast response time but you’ll have to sacrifice the advantages of having an IPS screen (wider viewing angles, better colors, etc).

And once again, just as GL503, there are I/O differences between the GL703VD and GL703VM variants (no matter SCAR or not). The models with GTX 1050 GPU have 3x USB 3.0 + 1x USB 2.0 Type-A ports + HDMI 1.4, while the GTX 1060 configurations are equipped with 4x USB 3.0 Type-A ports + HDMI 2.0.
