First impressions of GSmart Essence – an extremely budget model

GSmart has already shown their interest in getting a bigger market share in the low and mid-range segment and one of their latest additions to the budget class – GSmart Essence is in our hands and we’re currently working on its in depth review. However, before anything else, here’s our first impressions of the phone.

GSmart Essence is a 4.5-inch smartphone and despite its thick screen bezels, it is comfortable to hold and use with one hand. The thin profile aids with the usability (8.8 mm) and slightly curved sides as well. The weight of the device is only 125 grams. While we are still on the design, we should note that it features a matte back cover, which looks interesting, but sadly collects nasty fingerprints and smudges. It is easily removable and ubder it you’ll find both SIM card slots (micro and mini), both of which are under the battery. The microSD memory card slot, which is a lifesaver since the device having only 8GB of internal storage, is also there.

The smartphone runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat and offers more or less vanilla experience since GSmart haven’t made any major changes. The menus and icons have the classic Android appearance, but we do see a lot of pre-installed apps. Among them, we find CM Security, Clean Master, Battery Doctor, WPS Office and others.

The rear camera of GSmart Essence has a 5MP sensor and LED flash. Things get more exciting as we look at the camera menu that offers a wide variety of manual settings such as white balance, ISO, exposure, brightness, contrast and many others. However, things don’t come to an end here. Once we turn to video recording mode, we see that the camera is capable of recording videos in Full HD resolution as well as slow motion an that’s rarely seen in such budget device.

GSmart Essence has a 4.5-inch screen with IPS panel and from what we’ve seen so far we can say that it offers perfect viewing angles, rich and vivid colors and high contrast ratio. However, using the device outdoors may prove to be difficult as the display reflects sunlight.

The phone boasts the Spreadtrum SC7731G (quad-core, 1.30GHz, Cortex-A7) SoC, which we found in GSmart Classic as well. We’ve already shared our in-depth review on the model and we’re expecting similar results in our computing and graphic performance tests. We also hope that it won’t affect the outer temperatures of the device after continuos uaage. Anyway, once we’re finished testing the device, we’ll share all the information and results we got in our upcoming full review of the model.
