Snapdragon 617 (+Adreno 405) vs Helio P10 (+Mali-T860) – performance, benchmark tests and temperatures

Snapdragon 617 and Helio P10 are two of the popular mobile chips developed by Qualcomm and MediaTek respectively. In both cases, we are talking about a mid-range processor and the smartphones on the market working with one of the two chips are definitely not uncommon. That is precisely why we think that the comparison between them would be quite interesting. First, we will take a look at the specs sheet, then we will compare the results scored in our various benchmark tests and finally, we will check which of the two chips leads to a greater exterior heating. For this purpose, we use the results got from Moto G4 and Moto M, working with Snapdragon 617 and Helio P10 respectively.

Snapdragon 617 comes in its MSM8952 modification available in Moto G4. This is a Qualcomm mobile chip, which offers eight Cortex-A53 cores divided into two sections. However, there is a slight difference in their operating frequencies, as their first four cores run at 1.21 GHz, while the other four – at 1.52GHz. Snapdragon 617 is a 64-bit mobile processor manufactured through a 28 nm technological process. Nonetheless, it already supports QuickCharge 3.0 technology, which according to Qualcomm is up to 38% more efficient than QuickCharge 2.0 and offers four times faster charging of the mobile device compared to standard charging. Here we can also find the Qualcomm Safeswitch technology that allows you to remotely deactivate the device in case you lose it or it is stolen. The specs sheet also includes LTE Cat. 7 support with a download speed of up to 300 Mbps, Wi-Fi 802.11n/ac, LPDDR3 933MHz memory, Bluetooth 4.1, Full HD displays, up to 21MP cameras as well as Full HD video recording at 60 fps. The GPU is Adreno 405, running at 550MHz.

On the other side of the ring is Moto M, which features a MediaTek MT6755 Helio P10 mobile chip. It is 64-bit and built on a 28nm node. MediaTek promises up to 30% better energy efficiency than other chips using a 28nm technology. The mobile processor includes eight Cortex-A53 cores, running at a clock speed of up to 1.81GHz. Helio P10 supports Full HD displays as well as MiraVision 2.0, UltraDimming and BluLight Defender technologies. Also found here is LTE Cat 6 connectivity which will lead to higher connection speeds. The chip works with up to 21MP cameras and allows recording of Full HD video. The present GPU is Mali-T860, running at frequencies of 700MHz.

Benchmark results

Both mobile chips offer smooth operation but the comparison between them is definitely curious. In order to check this, we carried out a few benchmark tests that test both computing (the first two tests) and graphics power (the last four tests). You can see the results in the table below.

External temperatures

Oce again, we compare the external temperatures of the two devices after an extended 3D gaming session load. Here, however, we make the assumption that the maximum measured values in the rear part of the smartphones don’t always depend solely on the mobile chip performance. In this particular case, Moto M is one of the models with Helio P10, which offers the lowest external temperatures after load. However, that’s not the case with Sony Xperia XA, for example, although it also uses the services of Helio P10. In our case, however, we focus on Moto G4 and Moto M and the results show that Moto G4 with Snapdragon 617 has increased its temperature more after an extended gaming test simulated with the help of the Epic Citadel application.
