[Specs, Info, and Prices] ASUS sets its sights on the mid-range market with its newest ASUS ROG Strix G15 and G17 with new AMD and NVIDIA hardware

While ASUS is known for its flagship laptops, which bring an unparalleled level of performance, not everyone has the resources to spend on such a machine. That is why more entry and mid-range options have become more and more popular. ASUS has always offered more budget-conscious devices, which still bring good performance, but at a price, which won’t leave you bankrupt.

Today we are here to talk about the latest mid-range options from ASUS, in the faces of the ROG Strix G15 and G17, which bring the newest Ryzen 5000-series CPUs and RTX 3000 Ampere GPUs from NVIDIA, along with several display options depending on your lifestyle and work.

The ROG Strix G15 will be available in Q1 2021 from €999 (US$1,215) and the G17 from €1,599 (US$1,945).

Design

Beginning on the exterior, the devices have identical designs, with metal used throughout the whole body, which provides the ever so needed sturdiness and rigidity that a big laptop of this class needs. The design itself is quite subdued, which is a nice refresh from previous ROG devices. You get a ROG logo on the back of the lid, which is off-centered, for a more modern look, as well as a triangular part of the lid with a lettered design on it. The red patch on the corner is a nice addition and makes the laptop stand out.

Display

Both devices have identical displays, with the G15 getting 15.6-inch screens and the G17 getting 17.3-inch panels. Otherwise, they offer the same resolutions and refresh rates across both models. While the 17.3-inch screen will offer a better experience while gaming it will also decrease the portability by a noticeable margin. After all, the larger G17 weighs 0.4 kg more than the G15. For the displays themselves, all are IPS panels, with two of them having a Full HD resolution and a refresh rate of either 144Hz or 300Hz. The third option has a QHD resolution and a refresh rate of 165Hz.

Specifications

For the most important part, the specs, both of these ROG Strix devices have nearly identical specs, meaning that no matter which one you pick, you still get a quite similar spec sheet. The only difference is in the CPU choices, where on the ROG Strix G15, the only option is the Ryzen 7 5800H.

As for the ROG Strix G17, you can one-up the Ryzen 7 by getting the Ryzen 9 5900HX, which is a beast of a CPU, that will deliver not only in gaming but in video rendering and productivity as well. For the graphics cards, you have identical options for the two laptops, which are either the RTX 3060 or RTX 3070, the latest mobile GPUs from NVIDIA.
