[Specs, Info, and Prices] The Acer Predator lineup has two new additions: The thin Triton 500 SE (PT516-51s) and the heavy duty Helios 500 (PH517-52)

Acer was a little late to the game when it comes to laptops with the new Tiger Lake chips. Recently they dropped a load of new devices, including gaming laptops (which we will cover now), productivity notebooks, and business-grade devices.

The Predator Triton 500 SE offers a relatively thin and lightweight chassis that is full of powerful hardware inside. If you prefer a more “standard” gaming laptop, the Predator Helios is exactly that: a heavy-duty machine with appropriate cooling to keep the temperatures from the powerful internals in check.

Today we are doing a quick overview of the Acer Predator Triton 500 SE and Helios 500.

The Predator Triton 500 SE is available now with a starting price of $1.749, while the Helios 500 is expected to hit the market in August with a starting price of $2.500.

Design

In terms of design, we really like the Triton 500 SE, dare we say we like it more than the Helios. It is definitely the sleeker-looking device of the two. It weighs 2.55 kg and is 19.81 mm tall. While we don’t know anything about the Helios 500’s dimensions, we assume that it would be significantly thicker and heavier. The build materials for both laptops haven’t been specified, but we would think that a good portion of them would be metallic as you’re paying close to two grand for the Triton and even more for the Helios. The designs themselves are pretty gamer-y, especially the Helio, which has RGB all over the place, while the Triton has a more subdued look.

Display

The Triton 500 has two displays to pick from, both sporting a diagonal of 16 inches, WQHD resolution, use IPS panels, and a refresh rate of 165Hz or 240Hz. The displays use a 16:10 aspect ratio, making them suitable for productivity, having space for multiple menus and programs. The Helios 500 also offers two displays with a diagonal of 17.3-inches. The first one has a Full HD resolution and a refresh rate of 360Hz. The second panel increases the resolution to 4K but has a lower refresh rate of 120Hz.

Specifications and features

Lastly, the specs on both laptops are very similar. The Triton can get up to a Core i9-11800H, while the Helios ups that to a Core i9-11980HK, which is a souped-up version. For the graphics, both laptops offer up to the RTX 3080 (Laptop), the top GPU in NVIDIA’s mobile arsenal.

In terms of features, both laptops come with an RGB backlit keyboard. The Triton also offers a fingerprint reader, something that the Helios lacks. Besides that, you get  Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5 support on both.
