Lenovo Legion 5 Pro (16″): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro (16″)

1. Design and build quality

The laptop has a strong aluminum chassis, which looks fantastic and is super rigid. The design has a sleek and elegant front, with an aggressive rear end, something very common in the automotive world. The lid has the Legion logo, which has a rainbow effect and looks spectacular. The color is a mix of white and grey also is quite different but makes the laptop stand out, so we take it as a win.

In terms of weight and height, the laptop stops the scales at 2.45 kg, while being 26.85 mm tall, which is quite heavy and thick, but we are talking about a laptop with powerful hardware that needs appropriate cooling and a 16-inch screen.

The lid can be easily opened with a single hand, but it cant lay completely flat with its display opened. However, you still get thin bezels along with an HD webcam and an electronic shutter.

2. Upgradeability

The laptop offers superb upgradeability, with both the RAM and SSD storage being expandable. There are two SODIMM slots, that can fit up to 64GB of DDR4 RAM in dual-channel mode. There are also two M.2 PCIe x4 drives for future storage expansion.

Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows exactly how the upgrade procedure goes, both for the RAM and storage.

3. Display quality

The laptop comes with a 16-inch QHD+ IPS screen. It comes with a 165Hz refresh rate, which makes it great for gaming. The additional HDR and G-Sync support further improve the gaming experience. The display has comfortable viewing angles, a max brightness of 506 nits in the middle of the screen, 488 nits as an average for the entire display area, and a maximum deviation of 8%. The contrast ratio is good, sitting at 1140:1. The display also covers 94% of the sRGB color gamut.

The color accuracy improved significantly once we applied our Design and Gaming profile, which brought the dE value down to 1.3.

Here are the results of our test with both the factory settings (left) and with our Design and Gaming profile applied (right).

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Gesundheitsschutz

4. Input devices

The laptop has a fantastic keyboard that is one of the best units that we have tested. It has a NumPad section, along with large keycaps, which make it super comfortable to use. The keys themselves have long key travel and clicky feedback. The keyboard also has a backlight, with either White, Blue, or a 4-zone RGB one. There are also keys for the three performance presents, Quiet, Auto, and Extreme Performance.

The touchpad is covered with the well-known Mylar surface. It has smooth gliding and accurate tracking.

1 reason NOT to buy the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro (16″)

1. I/O

Now, the laptop has an abundance of ports, however, we would have loved to see a MicroSD card reader, which would have been huge for photographers that can quickly transfer photos from their camera to their laptop. Still, you get a lot of I/O coverage, that is split on the left, right, and back sides.

The left houses an audio jack and a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port. Going over to the rear, we see most of the I/O sitting there, with an RJ-45 connector, a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2), two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, an HDMI 2.1 connector, one more USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and the power plug. Finally, on the right side, we have a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port and a button for the camera shutter.
