AMD Radeon RX 500 series – rebranded RX 4XX with higher performance and lower energy consumption?

The new AMD Radeon RX 500 GPUs will be revealed in mid April. As time races on towards this date, there appear more and more pieces of information related to them that we come across. Today we would like to share the chips’ codenames used for the RX 500 series.

Let us begin by mentioning that the new chips will not actually be brand new, but just revamped versions of last year’s models. However, the manufacturing process has evolved from 14 nm LPE to 14 nm LPP, where LPE stands for Low Power Early, while LPP means Low Power Plus. The latter is considered as an improved version of LPE and it ensures higher performance with lower energy consumption.

Moving on to the improvements of the new GPUs over the older ones. It is expected that the Radeon RX 580 will feature the Polaris 20 XTX processor which we remember from RX 480, the difference being that it will now tick at a higher frequency – 1340 MHz compared to 1266 MHz. As a result, the new chip will boast 6.17 TFLOPs of graphics power. Also, the graphics card’s memory will be of the GDDR5 type with a capacity of 8 GB, and it will work at 8 GHz on a 256-bit bus. As for the memory bandwidth – it is expected to be 256 GB/s. Price-wise, we are looking at approximately $200.

The second GPU we shall look at is AMD Radeon RX 570. It will feature a Polaris 20 XL chip, ticking at 1244 MHz, which will result in 5.10 TFLOPs of graphics power. As for the memory side of things here, we are again looking at 8 GB GDDR5 but its effective frequency will be 7 GHz, an increase over the 6.6 GHz that the RX 470 uses. And its memory bandwidth will very likely be 224 GB/s, while its price – around $150.

Radeon RX 560 will offer all features of the Polaris 11 chip. We would like to remind you that last year’s RX 460 was presented with a locked core. On the other hand, RX 560 will be clocked at a frequency of 1287 MHz with 2.63 TFLOPs of graphics power, along with 1280bit 4 GB DDR5 memory. It is possible for AMD to price this product lower than $100.

There are only a couple of weeks until the launch of the new graphics cards part of the RX 500 series, and the future AMD flagship model – Radeon RX Vega is expected to be released toward the end of 2017’s Q2.
