Apple reveals iPhone X – all you need to know about it

Apart from the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple announced the long expected iPhone X at its official event in Steve Jobs Theater, California!

Just like iPhone 8, iPhone X is water resistant (with IP67 certification), while its body is made of metal and glass. This time the front part boasts a huge 5.8-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2436 x 1125 p, which Apple calls Super Retina Display.

Quite expected, this is the best screen to have been featured in an iPhone model thus far, and its pixels highlight the fact that it is also the most detailed one – its resolution and diagonal result in pixel density of 438 ppi. The latter guarantees that you won’t be able to differentiate the separate pixels even at immediate proximity to the screen.

Furthermore, the display supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision for as vivid as possible (and even unrealistic) colors. Also, the 3D Touch technology, measuring the pressure exercised on the panel has also been implemented here.

The screen bezels are extremely thin, but still they are present, which can be considered as a plus, avoiding potential unwanted presses along the edges.

Maybe you’ve already noticed the black area above the screen which actually unveils the position of the front-facing camera (7MP), earpiece, microphone and a number of sensors scanning ambient light, the distance to the objects in front of the device, the depth of field and up to 30 000 dots on your face that are being projected by a module, integrated in this high-tech black strip.

If you are wondering why all this is necessary, the answer is Face ID – a security system using your unique facial features. According to Apple, the chance of mistake is 1 : 1 million, and this is superior to TouchID (the fingerprint scanning system) by a great margin – in the latter, the chances for a mistake is once in 50 000 cases.

Additionally, Apple’s software specialists have used the Face ID sensors for yet another intriguing feature which has not been seen anywhere else – Animoji. These are animated emojis using the motion of your face to convey the particular emotion – the system scans over 50 facial muscles and transfers them onto an emoticon you have selected.

For now the animojis will be available for you in iMessage but there is a high chance that they will soon “invade” other messaging apps.

If you prefer sending standard shots and selfies to your friends, iPhone X has you covered with dual 12MP rear cameras – one wide-angle with f/1.8 aperture plus a telephoto one with f/2.4 aperture. As for the front one, it is 7MP. Apple iPhone X can record 4K videos at 60 fps and 1080p videos at 240 fps.

For the crisp and sharp images you get two OISs, and the camera also boasts optical zoom, a True Tone flash with four diodes and sapphire cover that protects it from scratches.

From a software point of view, the camera of iPhone X comes with a Live Photos features, face and body recognition, panorama capture with up to 63MP of resolution, but the most intriguing here is Portrait mode and Portrait Lightning. This is a mode that operates with the Face ID depth sensor, thanks to which you can simulate various lighting effects that remind one of professional photo studios.

After all aforementioned features, it seems that performance is not the focus of this bad boy, however, iPhone X has some merits in this respect.

The new Apple flagship uses an A11 Bionic chip for which the California company claims that it is “the most powerful smartphone chip ever made”. And so, the Neutral engine is capable of performing up to 600 billion operations per second, but we comment on the real life performance only when we lay our hands on this model.

Nonetheless, it will certainly not disappoint us, and according to Apple, the two high-performance cores are up to 25% faster than those in A10 Fusion. As for the energy-efficient cores, they are four in number and their power surpasses that of their predecessors with up to 70%.

The fans of mobile gaming (their numbers are bound to increase more and more, considering the advance of VR) will certainly be happy to learn that the graphics performance has been significantly increased by 30%.

But what is the effect of this performance on battery life and endurance?

We cannot remain impressed or surprised by the availability of a wireless charging system, considering the fact that the Qi technology has long established itself but a pleasant news here is Apple’s claim that the battery endures with up to 2 hours more than that of iPhone 7. Our tests show that Apple’s checks are really strict and accurate, so we can trust them on this one.

As expected, the only drawback of the long expected iPhone X will be its price, which is really… stunning. The model with 64GB internal storage will start from 1150 EUR in Europe. In comparison, the new Galaxy Note 8 by Samsung sells for approximately 175 EUR less.
