Lenovo goes live with its new ThinkPad P50 and P70 workstations with Xeon CPUs

Just a few days ago Intel silently announced its new mobile Xeon processors and here are one of the first notebooks to adapt the new chips. Both the P50 and the P70 are aimed at users who are in the need of serious compute performance and the Xeon chips are here to deliver. The main difference between the two models is the screen size and as you might have guessed already, the P50 offers 15.6-inch screen while the P70 goes along with the 17.3-inch panel.

The notebooks will feature the first official mobile Xeon CPU from Intel – Xeon E3-1500M v5, but we still don’t have enough information about the specs of the chip, but will most likely deliver serious performance since it’s based on the new Skylake architecture. Also, the workstations will be supporting up to 64GB of DDR4 RAM in 4 SODIMM slots so it’s nice to see that the mobile version of the chip will support ECC memory. Furthermore, Thunderbolt 3 is included as a connectivity option as well as 802.11ac Wi-Fi module from Intel, Bluetooth 4.1, vPro, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 1.4, mini DisplayPort 1.2 and LTE-A support.

Everything looks fine and dandy, but what about the GPU? Well, we are still waiting for the official release to find out, but the GPU inside will be an NVIDIA Quadro graphics card for sure. Display options vary from 1920 x 1080 IPS touch and non-touch to 3840 x 2160 IPS non-touch, but the best part is that Lenovo has teamed up with X-Rite to deliver Pantone color calibration for the design-oriented users. Storage options are also impressive – up to 2TB of HDD and up to 1TB of PCIe SSD would be more than enough. The company offers the machines with Windows 10 Pro, 8.1 Pro and downgrade option to Windows 7 Professional. Linux distributions are also available – Ubuntu and RHEL.

Products will be available later on this year with a starting price of the P50 from $1599 and $1999 for the P70.
