Overclocking Palit GeForce GTX 1080 GameRock Premium – we managed to go above 2.1GHz

After we managed to overclock MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X, the time came for the other non-reference GPU model in our office – GeForce GTX 1080 GameRock Premium by Palit. The latter is a 2.5-slot which should mean that its cooler is a solid performer – whether it’s that good, we shall see in our detailed review.

For an appropriate end of the week, we decided to share with you the good news that we managed to increase the core frequency above 2.1 GHz. This was the limit NVIDIA had set at the announcement of GTX 1080 – 2100 MHz and a fan spinning at max rpm. Since we had failed to reach this goal with GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X, we decided to try out the GameRock model. After a few driver errors, we managed to reach “only” 2139 MHz. Despite this, throughout the most of our tests the maintained frequency was 2113 MHz – great results.

To show you that we succeeded in maintaining these frequencies, we used several benchmark tests from the 3DMark package. The screenshots below display how GameRock performed. For the purpose of comparison, we can share that GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X scored 5408 points after being overclocked. We must also note that the GPU we tested was being cooled by air, without any additional modifications of the chip. The CPU and RAM were operating at stock frequencies. Here is what GameRock managed.
