[Comparison] HP ENVY 17 (2021) vs HP ENVY 17 (2020) – what are the differences?

The HP ENVY lineup brings stylish and fairly affordable laptops that have the great build quality and amazing features that HP is known for. Today we will take a look at the ENVY 17, which recently got updated for 2021. We will also compare it to its predecessor, to see what the differences are and if the new one will be worth the extra $$$ that it will cost.

Starting from the design, both laptops share the same aluminum unibody, which provides the necessary structural support and rigidity, that a laptop of this size needs. They also have an identical “Sandblasted” aluminum finish. The differences can be seen once you open the lid. HP has found a way to increase the size of the touchpad by 19%, which will greatly improve its usability. The keyboard and front-firing speakers, tuned by Bang&Olufsend, remain the same.

The display options remain the same, with there being two 17.3-inch panels. The base option comes in a Full HD resolution and has an IPS matrix, but if you want to, you can upgrade to a 4K OLED panel, which comes with a factory color calibration, which should be fantastic for creators and artists.

Lastly, the specifications, are a bit of a mixed bag. The new laptop comes with the Core i7-1165G7, which is a quad-core CPU, with eight treads and uses the new Tiger Lake architecture. The interesting part is that the same CPU was also made available in the 2020 version, which is less expensive, and in turn, makes for a better value for money. When it comes to graphics performance, this CPU comes with the Iris Xe Graphics G7, which performs great and is enough for productivity and most people. However, if you simply have to have a dedicated GPU, there is the NVIDIA MX450, which replaces the MX330, which is found on last year’s version.
