Coolpad Modena first impressions – affordable and elegant 5.5-inch model

A couple of days ago we did a preview on Coolpad Modena, in which we introduced you to its specs and capabilities and now the device is in our hands and we will give you our first thoughts that will later be follow by an in-depth review with our regular tests.

Let’s kick things off with the design. First we would like to share with you the bad news – the screen bezels aren’t as nearly as thin as those that are shown on the advertisement images. They aren’t anything special compared to most other models currently out on the market. Despite that, the phone has a slightly curved back and relatively thin body – 8.7 mm thickness (without the protruding rear camera), which secures a better grip as far as its possible, considering the 5.5-inch display. Sadly you will have a hard time moving your thumb through the whole display (things get harder after the middle). The weight of the device is in the normal range for its size – 158 grams.

As we mentioned earlier, Coolpad Modena’s display is 5.5″, which is a big plus, considering its price is around $200. It would seem that there is a trend forming, even in this price range, where more and more models are made with larger screens. The resolution is somewhat disappointing – 540 x 960 pixels and we would’ve loved it to have at least an HD panel. Nonetheless, colors are vivid and contrast ratio is good thanks to the IPS panel that compensates to some extent. We are about to run our tests on Coolpad Modena’s display and you will be able find the results in our review. Anyway, pixel density is 200 ppi.

The battery of the device has 2500 mAh capacity and in contrary of having a big display, the SoC of the device, which is the other main energy consumer, is Snapdragon 410. This model from Qualcomm is famous for its low energy consumption and because of that we assume that the device will perform well in our battery tests.

The main camera of the device has an 8MP sensor and we have an article prepared for you, which includes some sample photos made with the phone. Looking at the camera menus we see some neat features like smile detection, night, HDR and Beauty modes. The camera is also capable of capturing videos in Full HD resolution. On the front, Coolpad Modena has a 2MP camera.

Although it is common for devices of this price range to have low amounts of internal storage, the 8GB found in Coolpad Modena aren’t pleasing, especially when you consider that the device will have only 4.5GB at your disposal. Luckily there is a microSD card slot, which makes things more tolerable.

Software-wise things look up to par. This is not only due to the OS that the device is running (Android 5.1 Lollipop), but also from the many pre-installed apps and features of Coolpad’s UI. Some of the applications that you will find already installed on the phone are Skype, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, WPS Office, SwiftKey keyboard etc. In the sub-menu “Smart Control” you will find various neat features like gesture control and many others.
