First impressions of Meizu MX5 – a new competitor in the top tier

We already gave our thought on the new Meizu m2 note, which we are currently testing, and now it is time to do the same with a different model from the same company – Meizu MX5. We will try to keep you informed about all the insight we gather for both devices after our tests. Yet again, we are starting with a simple introduction of the phone and our initial thoughts about it.

Calling Meizu MX5 an improved higher-class version of Meizu m2 note wouldn’t be wrong. Both smartphones feature a 5.5-inch display but the MX5, being more expensive, has a better build quality. The device is very pleasant to touch and also looks incredible thanks to its thin body (7.6 mm) and aluminum construction. It is worth mentioning that there are small areas around the top and bottom of the device that are made of plastic. They are completely unnoticeable just by looking at the phone. We are guessing that the reason behind them it to provide better reception – a similar solution to that of the iPhone and HTC One lines. Speaking of that, the overall appearance of Meizu MX5 resembles the iPhone 6 keeping not only the looks the sturdy construction as well.

Just like in Meizu m2 note, there is only a Home button present. Its functions are the same, as we explained in our first impressions article about m2 note. In case you haven’t read it – pressing the button takes you to the home screen, touching it gets you one step back (just like a back button) and if you want to open the running applications menu you will have to swipe from the bottom edge. A major difference between the home buttons of both devices is that the one in MX5 has an integrated fingerprint sensor. So far it has been doing the job flawlessly. Another similarity between the two devices is found in the software department where you will barely find any change. The variety of gestures and pre-installed apps are also present.

The lack of microSD memory card slot could be considered as a slight drawback. Apparently due to the thin unibody construction, there has been free space only for the double nanoSIM card tray. The model, however, has 16GB of internal storage and after the OS, UI and apps take their share, you’re left with 11.1GB.

The 20.7MP rear camera surprised us. It has a double LED flash and laser focus and compared to the camera of m2 note, the sensor in MX5 protrudes a bit, but we can let that pass, considering its capabilities. Aside from the wide variety of shooting modes and adjustable settings, it can record videos in 4K resolution. The photos that we’ve taken with the device look great and they will be available in our upcoming article about the phone’s camera.
The SoC in Meizu MX5 is Helio X10 and our expectations about its performance are really high. The mobile chip has eight Cortex-A53 cores, clocked at 2.2GHz. Sadly, there are some concerns about the device overheating and making the housing unpleasant to touch, but we will see if they turn out to be real after our corresponding tests. Anyway for now we are happy with the overall performance of the phone – it’s fast and responsive.
