[Specs, Info, and Prices] MSI levels up its workstation laptops with the MSI WS66 (11Ux)

We think we’re starting to understand MSI’s naming scheme. Their gaming laptops start with a “G” (for example GE Raider, GP Leopard, etc.). It turns out the “W” inside the WS66 stands for “workstation”. It feels like a light bulb just flashed above us.

Now, to get back to the WS66, it is MSI’s improvement on top of the WS65 from last year. We have Tiger Lake and new RTX professional-grade graphics, which are tightly packed in a relatively light and slim chassis (for workstation laptop standards, of course).

Today we are giving you a quick overview of the MSI WS66 (11Ux).

The MSI WS66 is available now with a starting price of $2,599.00 for the configuration with a Core i7-11800H and an RTX A3000.

MSI WS66 (11Ux): Full Specs

Design

In terms of design, we see huge improvements, especially when looking at the old and new devices. We get a much more streamlined, angular approach to the exterior design, with sharp edges and rounded corners. The body looks to be very similar to the one on the GS66 Stealth. In terms of build materials, nothing is said specifically, but if we had to take a shot in the dark, we would say that the laptop is entirely made of metal. Weight and height-wise, the laptop stops the scales at 2.10 kg, while being 18 mm tall. All of that makes the laptop fairly easy to move around.

Display

The laptop has a single display option, but it is a really good one, so we don’t mind. The panel of choice has a diagonal of 15.6 inches, comes in a Full HD resolution, and has a 60Hz refresh rate. The display also covers 99% of the sRGB color gamut and comes with True Color technology, which should provide adequate color accuracy. The bezels on the panel are pretty thin, but still have space to house a Webcam, which is a pleasant surprise.

Specifications and features

The MSI WS66 comes with two options for CPU and two for GPU. The entry configuration comes with the Core i7-11800H, while the Core i9-11900H is also available. Both processors are part of the new Tiger Lake H-series, which is pretty new, so the performance numbers for it are still up in the air, so we can’t talk about it before we have tested them ourselves. As for the graphics, you can pick between the RTX A3000 or A5000, both of which are professional-grade, and give the laptop the power of real-time ray tracing and AI, which can greatly improve the workflow of engineers, designers, scientists, etc.

Features-wise, you get a 99.9Wh battery unit, which on the GS66 Stealth provided less than ideal battery life numbers, to say the least. A backlit keyboard, stereo speakers, and a fingerprint reader come as standard, as well as Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5 support. The laptop is also ISV certified, providing great compatibility between an array of different software.
