ASUS TUF Gaming F17 (FX706): Full Specs / In-depth Review

3 reasons to BUY the ASUS TUF Gaming F17 (FX706)

1. Design and build quality

Despite being entirely made of plastic, the device is quite rigid and doesn’t give up easily when we try to flex it. There are models with an aluminum lid, which would give you a more premium feel, but even the wholly plastic build is fine, as the goal here is the best performance per dollar and not offering premium materials. Despite being a 17-inch notebook, it is surprisingly lightweight, for gaming laptop standards weighing only 2.60 kg, while having a profile of 23.9-25.2mm.

The lid doesn’t open with one hand and the hinges aren’t that good, making the display wobbly. You get thin bezels and an HD webcam, which is lacking on some very expensive ROG laptops.

2. Upgradeability

The upgradeability here is on point, with the laptop offering two SODIMM RAM slots and plenty of options when it comes to SSD expansion. The SODIMM slots can take up to 64GB of DDR4 RAM in dual-channel mode. You also have one M.2 PCIe x4 drive and one 2.5-inch SATA bay, with the connector and mounting brackets included.

Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows you how to get safe access to both the SODIMM and SSD slots.

3. Display

ASUS offers you three display options, each coming with an IPS panel and Full HD resolution. They differ in their refresh rate, so you have to choose between 60Hz, 120Hz, or 144Hz. Our laptop had the 144Hz panel and it performed all right. The display offered comfortable viewing angles, a max brightness of 271 nits in the middle of the screen and for the entire area of the panel, with a deviation of just 4%, so the uniformity is on point. The contrast ratio is great, sitting at 1270:1. In terms of color coverage, the display only covered half of the sRGB color gamut.

Here are the results of our color accuracy test once we applied our Design and Gaming profile, which gave us a dE value of 3.6.

2 reasons NOT to buy the ASUS TUF Gaming F17 (FX706)

1. Battery life

The battery here has a size of 54Wh, which is nothing for this hardware. ASUS offers configurations with a larger 90Wh unit, which should perform better. In our battery life tests, the unit lasted for 5 hours and 58 minutes of Web browsing, and 4 hours and 21 minutes of video playback. As with all of our tests, we had the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

2. Input devices

The keyboard here has decent key travel, while the feedback is a bit mushy and soft, which isn’t ideal for gaming. The Arrow keys are also pretty small, but at least you get a NumPad. The keyboard has a white backlight, but an RGB one is also available. The touchpad is way better in terms of quality, as it offers smooth gliding and accurate tracking. It also has dedicated physical buttons, which are missing even on some productivity and workstation devices.

you are dead wrong about the display. TUF means powerful hardware and the worst display at the price point. low brightness, horrible colors and high responce. i have no idea what i just read.

Professional at nothing
