Top 5 reasons to BUY or NOT to buy the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro (14″)

Small and portable laptops have been the trend for 2020 and 2021. As always, Apple has once again been the pioneer, having its MacBook Air and MacBook Pro for around 15 years now. While they haven’t always been the thinnest and lightest devices out there, they have done spectacularly well.

Today we have another similar device, this time being built by none other but Lenovo. Their IdeaPad 5 Pro (14″) offers a 14-inch portable platform with more than decent performance, thanks to the Zen 3-based Ryzen 5000U-series of chips. We have been very impressed by the Ryzen 5000H-series, but it’s time AMD offered us some new, low-TDP AMD processors that are not rebranded last-gen products.

Today, we present you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro (14″).

Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro (14″): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro (14″)

1. Design and build quality

The laptop offers a choice of build materials, with either aluminum or carbon fiber. This is a complete 180° from the regular IdeaPad 5, which uses plastic everywhere. We had the aluminum unit with us and were satisfied with its rigidity and sturdiness, albeit there was some flex to be seen from both the lid and the base. In terms of portability, you get a laptop that weighs only 1.41 kg and is only 17.99 mm tall.

The hinges of the laptop work really well, allowing the lid to open with a single hand. They are really smooth and well-balanced. Opening the lid reveals a matte display with thin bezels and a fantastic set of input devices. The keyboard offers decent travel, which is totally okay considering the thickness of the laptop, clicky feedback, and large keycaps, which really improve the overall experience. Below the keyboard, you can see a touchpad with decent size, smooth gliding, and accurate tracking.

2. I/O

The laptop offers decently wide I/O for its small size, with the ports being split into the left and right sides. On the left, you get two USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, an HDMI 1.4b connector, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. On the opposite side, we have two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, and an SD card reader.

3. Display quality

The laptop comes with two display options, both with a 14-inch diagonal, a 16:10 aspect ratio, and an IPS panel. The first display has a 2.2K resolution, while the second screen ups that to 2.8K, while also having a 90Hz refresh rate. Our laptop had the 2.8K panel and we were totally satisfied with its qualities.

The display offers excellent viewing angles, a max brightness of 408 nits in the middle of the screen, 404 nits as an average for the entire display area, and a maximum deviation of 12%. The contrast ratio is very good, sitting at 1530:1. One of the most important aspects of a Pro laptop is a display that has a wide color coverage and produces accurate colors. Here the panel covers 99% of the sRGB color gamut.

In terms of color accuracy, the panel is good right from the get-go, with a dE value of 1.8. If you want to bring it down even further, you can use our Design and Gaming display profile, which resulted in a dE value of 1.3.

Below you can compare the scores from our tests with both the factory settings (left) and with our Design and Gaming profile (right).

4. Performance

Finally, we get some Zen 3 ULV processors, to answer Intel’s Tiger Lake G-series. This laptop comes powered by either the Ryzen 5 5600U or the Ryzen 7 5800U. This laptop also has a choice for a discrete GPU, with our laptop coming equipped with the GeForce MX450 from NVIDIA.

1 reason NOT to buy the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro (14″)

1. Upgradeability

Sadly the laptop lacks upgradeability, especially in the RAM department. All of the memory is soldered onto the motherboard, leaving you with whatever you buy the laptop with. The storage offers more upgradeability, with there being one M.2 PCIe x4 drive and the SD card reader can be used for storage, with today’s SD cards reaching high amounts of storage.

Maybe the Pro version is better? I bought a IdeaPad 5 with a Ryzen 5625u 16Gb RAM and a 512 SSD. Glad I bought the 16Gb RAM with the soldered issue. Worst thing about this laptop is the awful screen quality. It is an IPS touchscreen 1080p, but it clearly is not 300 nits as they claim. Colors are also bad and washed out. But worse AMD decided that in battery mode they would reduce performance in order to increase battery life. Believe me, it is noticeable compared to AC power. Personally, I am disappointed using laptop on battery. The… Read more »
