Intel 545s SSD delivers both speed and capacity at an affordable price thanks to 64-layer flash

Intel starts selling their latest SSD the 545s. The 545s is an SSD targeted at the mainstream user. It provides high speeds and big capacities at a rather affordable price.

It is an SATA-based SSD currently available in a 2.5-inch form factor but expected to release in M.2 as well. Capacity ranges from the modest 128 GB up to 2 TB. You get 550 MB/s sequential reads and 500 MB/s writes. It is rated for 75K random read IOPS and 90K random write IOPS. Write endurance is rated at 288 TB backed by five years of warranty.

The currently available 2.5-inch 512 GB model is selling for $179. It manages to keep the rather low price and high-performance and big capacity thanks to the new 64-layer 3D TLC NAND flash memory used. It is the first Intel product to use 64-layer memory and the first of any manufacturer to hit the market. The extra-dense memory allows Intel to provide a bigger capacity using fewer chips thus lowering the price while maintaining performance.
