Radeon RX 480 is “reborn” with the new Doom patch that features Vulkan API

doom-2016_003Vulkan is an API (application programming interface) that was announced in 2015. It was created for the purpose of replacing the current OpenGL interface by increasing GPU performance. We observed that there is a difference in games between DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, but only Windows 10 users can enjoy the latest package. However, Vulkan is supported by Windows 7, 8.1, 10 and even Linux which is a great advantage for those of you who are not planning to install the latest Microsoft OS.

Additionally, Vulkan allows for free access to GPU resources. This means that processors become even less dependent in gaming titles because the focus shifts to graphics cards. Apart from that, there are functions such as Asynchronous Shaders, Shader Intrinsics and Frame Flip Optimizations which results in increased graphics performance in the world of virtual reality.

This is namely why id Software released a Doom patch that includes the new API, the developers consider that most important for a gamer is the smooth gameplay. In comparison to OpenGL API, Vulkan should increase fps in games. Still, when launching Doom from the Steam platform you have the option to choose the interface you prefer. Here are the results from Radeon RX 480 with the newest driver package Crimson Edition 16.7.2, and from GeForce GTX 1070 with the 368.69 WHQL drivers.

Judging by the results, we can say that AMD has done a very good job and the Vulkan support provides great results for the time being – we must not forget that Vulkan API is an open source. On the other hand, we can observe that GeForce GTX 1070 is not that efficient and has several negative scores with the new interface and higher resolutions. We expect NVIDIA to release a new driver package soon so as to see if it will support Vulkan, even though it is present in the list of supported technologies.
