Dell Latitude 13 5320 (2-in-1) review – a business convertible that probably asks a bit too much

Even in 2021, some things feel a little out of shape. For example – the convertible business notebooks. Even though they might be very useful on some occasions, they weren’t able to achieve the success of their “non-business” counterparts.

On that note, Dell is selling their Latitude 13 5320 side by side with its 2-in-1 version. And at least in terms of hardware, the difference is nonexistent. This includes the CPU options which go all the way up to the 10nm Core i7-1185G7.

Perhaps the most important feature is the screen, where Dell supplies a 1080p IPS panel that we hope will deliver some good color coverage, and accuracy, for it to be a viable choice. By the way, there won’t be a stylus included in the packaging, so if you need one, you have to consider adding the price of a Pen to the total tally.

What’s in the box?

Inside the package, there are some paper manuals, as well as a 65W USB Type-C power brick. Unfortunately, Dell hasn’t supplied the laptop with a stylus inside the package.

Design and construction

As a part of the Latitude 5000 lineup, this device comes with a very interesting build materials choice. Instead of aluminum, carbon fiber, or magnesium alloys, here we see bioplastics, produced from a paper-making byproduct. While it sounds very environmentally friendly, it is not really structurally sound material. The chassis of the notebook twists and pops like crazy, which ultimately makes it feel cheap. As for the measurements, we are talking about weight of 1.32 kg, and a profile of 17mm, which is decent.

Now, there are no magnets holding the lid in a closed position, and it can’t be opened with a single hand. But on the other side (literally), when you put the display in tablet mode, a couple of magnets actually secure it in place. Other than that, the lid, itself, is pretty sturdy, thanks to the glass sheet on top of the display. While the top and bottom bezels are quite bulky, the sides are very slim. Also, the notebook can be configured with up to a FullHD Web camera with IR face recognition and a privacy shutter. Not bad at all. Interestingly enough, there is a couple of tiny rubber feet on the bottom part of the lid, as it is intended to lift the base from the ground. And while it does so, you have to be way past the angle of comfort for it to happen.

However, for every good feature on this notebook, there is one that ruins the experience. Here, the culprit is the keyboard. While the actual comfortability is nice, thanks to the decent key travel, clicky feedback, and the present backlight, we saw a very severe deck flex, that should not be present within a laptop that costs way over $1000. And while the touchpad is pretty snappy and accurate, the rough surface does leave something to be desired. At least you get the option for a fingerprint reader, embedded into the power button.

Now, if you turn the laptop upside down, you will see the ventilation grill, as well as the speaker cutouts. Similarly to the non-convertible model, the hot air escapes the machine from the back, basically firing towards the bottom of the screen.

Ports

On the left side of the device, there are two Thunderbolt 4 connectors (either of which can charge the notebook), a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and a MicroSD card reader. And on the right, you can see a wedge-shaped security slot, an HDMI 2.0 connector, another USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, an audio jack, and an optional SIM card slot.

Display quality

Dell Latitude 13 5320 (2-in-1) is equipped with a Full HD IPS touchscreen panel, LG V0GPY-133WF7 (LGD05DC). Its diagonal is 13.3-inch (33.78 cm), and the resolution – 1920 х 1080p. Additionally, the screen ratio is 16:9, the pixel density – 166 ppi, their pitch – 0.153 х 0.153 mm. The screen can be considered Retina when viewed from at least 53 cm (from this distance, the average human eye can’t see the individual pixels).

Viewing angles are comfortable. We offer images at different angles to evaluate the quality.

The maximum measured brightness is 338 nits (cd/m2) in the middle of the screen and 332 nits (cd/m2) average across the surface with a maximum deviation of 6%. The Correlated Color Temperature on a white screen and at maximum brightness is 6800K – slightly colder than the 6500K temperature for sRGB.
In the illustration below you can see how the display performs from a uniformity perspective. The illustration below shows how matters are for operational brightness levels (approximately 140 nits) – in this particular case at 58% Brightness (White level = 141 cd/m2, Black level = 0.08 cd/m2).
Values of dE2000 over 4.0 should not occur, and this parameter is one of the first you should check if you intend to use the laptop for color-sensitive work (a maximum tolerance of 2.0 ). The contrast ratio is very good – 1780:1.

To make sure we are on the same page, we would like to give you a little introduction to the sRGB color gamut and the Adobe RGB. To start, there’s the CIE 1976 Uniform Chromaticity Diagram that represents the visible specter of colors by the human eye, giving you a better perception of the color gamut coverage and the color accuracy.

Inside the black triangle, you will see the standard color gamut (sRGB) that is being used by millions of people on HDTV and on the web. As for the Adobe RGB, this is used in professional cameras, monitors, etc for printing. Basically, colors inside the black triangle are used by everyone and this is the essential part of the color quality and color accuracy of a mainstream notebook.

Still, we’ve included other color spaces like the famous DCI-P3 standard used by movie studios, as well as the digital UHD Rec.2020 standard. Rec.2020, however, is still a thing of the future and it’s difficult for today’s displays to cover that well. We’ve also included the so-called Michael Pointer gamut, or Pointer’s gamut, which represents the colors that naturally occur around us every day.

The yellow dotted line shows Dell Latitude 13 5320 (2-in-1)’s color gamut coverage.

Its display covers 94% of the sRGB/ITU-R BT.709 (web/HDTV standard) in CIE1976, providing a punchy and vibrant image.

Our “Design and Gaming” profile delivers optimal color temperature (6500K) at 140 cd/m2 luminance and sRGB gamma mode.

We tested the accuracy of the display with 24 commonly used colors like light and dark human skin, blue sky, green grass, orange, etc. You can check out the results at factory condition and also, with the “Design and Gaming” profile.

Below you can compare the scores of Dell Latitude 13 5320 (2-in-1) with the default settings (left), and with the “Gaming and Web design” profile (right).

The next figure shows how well the display is able to reproduce really dark parts of an image, which is essential when watching movies or playing games in low ambient light.

The left side of the image represents the display with stock settings, while the right one is with the “Gaming and Web Design” profile activated. On the horizontal axis, you will find the grayscale, and on the vertical axis – the luminance of the display. On the two graphs below you can easily check for yourself how your display handles the darkest nuances but keep in mind that this also depends on the settings of your current display, the calibration, the viewing angle, and the surrounding light conditions.

Response time (Gaming capabilities)

We test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “black-to-white” and “white-to-black” method from 10% to 90% and vice versa.

We recorded Fall Time + Rise Time = 29 ms.

Health impact – PWM / Blue Light

PWM (Screen flickering)

Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is an easy way to control monitor brightness. When you lower the brightness, the light intensity of the backlight is not lowered, but instead turned off and on by the electronics with a frequency indistinguishable to the human eye. In these light impulses, the light/no-light time ratio varies, while brightness remains unchanged, which is harmful to your eyes. You can read more about that in our dedicated article on PWM.

Dell Latitude 13 5320 (2-in-1)’s backlight doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment at any level. This makes it comfortable for long periods of use while being safe for your eyes in this aspect.

Blue light emissions

Installing our Health-Guard profile not only eliminates PWM but also reduces the harmful Blue Light emissions while keeping the colors of the screen perceptually accurate. If you’re not familiar with the Blue light, the TL;DR version is – emissions that negatively affect your eyes, skin, and your whole body. You can find more information about that in our dedicated article on Blue Light.

Conclusion

Dell Latitude 13 5320 (2-in-1)’s touchscreen IPS panel has a Full HD resolution, a very good contrast ratio, comfortable viewing angles, and wide color coverage of about 94% of the sRGB gamut. Moreover, its backlight doesn’t flicker at any level, and thanks to our Gaming and Web design profile, it achieves great color accuracy. This makes it appropriate for presentations, and some design work.

Comfort during full load

Thankfully, the laptop is neither too loud, nor too warm on the outside.

Verdict

Well, to keep it short, the biggest selling point of this notebook is clearly the display its touchscreen IPS panel (LG V0GPY-133WF7 (LGD05DC)) has a Full HD resolution, very good contrast ratio, comfortable viewing angles, and wide color coverage of about 94% of the sRGB gamut. Moreover, its backlight doesn’t flicker at any level, and thanks to our Gaming and Web design profile, it achieves great color accuracy. This makes it appropriate for presentations, and some design work.

Also, you get more than decent battery life out of the 63Wh unit. We got 13 hours and 10 minutes of Web browsing and 11 hours and 20 minutes of video playback. This will result in a full workday worth of battery, but keep in mind that Dell is selling the device with a smaller 42Wh unit as well.

Upgradability is not its strongest point, as all of the memory is soldered to the motherboard. Also, there is a 4GB option, which is pretty much worthless. However, the configurations that come with 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB of RAM, will be working in dual-channel mode, which is nice for performance.

Despite the disappointment in the futureproof-ness of the notebook, the laptop makes up with its I/O selection. Not only are there two Thunderbolt 4 connectors, but you get a pair of USB Type-A ports, an HDMI connector, a MicroSD card slot, and even an optional SIM card reader.

By the way, you have options like IR face recognition, and a fingerprint reader, embedded into the power button.

As you probably know, if you haven’t skipped the first part of the review, is that this laptop is one for the environmentalists. Its chassis is made of bioplastics, derived from waste (byproduct), of the papermaking process. But even though Greta Thunberg will be happy, you are most likely to be left disappointed by the build quality of the product. Not only does the chassis flex and pop when you twist it, but the keyboard deck can’t be described as the strongest out there.

At the end of the day, we wouldn’t really recommend spending the money you earned with blood and sweat, for a convertible that doesn’t cut it.

Pros

  • A ton of security software
  • Doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment (LG V0GPY-133WF7)

  • Great battery life
  • Comfortable keyboard (but suffers from deck flex)
  • Optional fingerprint reader and IR face recognition systems
  • Wide I/O, including two Thunderbolt 4 connectors, and a MicroSD card reader
  • Covers 94% of sRGB colors and offers accurate color representation thanks to our Gaming and Web design profile (LG V0GPY-133WF7)

Cons

  • Build quality doesn’t match the premium price tag
  • Memory is soldered to the motherboard
  • No Pen inside the box
