[Comparison] Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 (14″, AMD) vs Yoga Slim 7 (14″, Intel) vs Yoga Slim 7 (15″) – a Yoga for everyone

The Yoga notebooks are very popular because of their build quality, good screen, powerful hardware options, and especially of transforming abilities – they can be laptops, “tent” devices, or tablets. On CES 2020 Lenovo introduced some of the 2020 Yoga notebooks – Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 14″ and Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 15″. Those devices have the latest Intel and AMD Zen 2 CPUs alongside new panel options, better connectivity, and easier portability.

Let’s make a quick comparison.

Design – premium all-aluminum build with thin bezels

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 14″ and 15″ devices feature an all-metal build which adds a premium feel and look. The transformers are light and slim – 14.9mm profile for the 14″ one and 15.9mm for the bigger one. The thin bezels around the displays look great, especially when you use the device as a tablet. Different color options are available for every notebook. For the AMD-based Slim 7, you can choose between Slate Grey (with optional fabric cover) and Orchid, while the Intel variant has one extra color to choose from – Dark Moss. At least for now, the big 15.6″ Yoga is available in Slate Grey color only.

Hardware: different CPUs for the three versions

The Yoga Slim 7 14″ laptops are divided into two versions – AMD-based and Intel-based notebooks. The AMD variant has Zen 2 CPUs options. You can choose the powerful Ryzen 7 4800U with 8 cores/16 threads (15W TDP) or you can also pick a configuration with Ryzen 7 4700U (8 cores without SMT, 15W TDP) or Ryzen 5 4600U (6 cores and 12 threads). The Zen 2 CPUs have a higher IPC, higher boost clock, bigger cache size, and much faster AMD Radeon Graphics. The specs of the iGPUs are unclear but for now, we know that 4700U has iGPU with 7 graphics cores and 1600Mhz boost frequency, while the Ryzen 7 4800U one has 8 graphics cores and 1750Mhz boost frequency.

The new mobile 7nm AMD CPUs bring better efficiency, lower power consumption, and goodies like LPDDR4X support.

The Intel-based devices can be picked with the 10nm Ice Lake CPUs with Intel Iris G7 or the less powerful variants – G4 and UHD G1. No 6 or 8 cores here, the most powerful CPU option is the 4-core i7-1065G7. More affordable processors are available too – i5-1035G4, i5-1035G7, and i5-1035G1. Unlike the AMD variant, the Intel machines have an option for a dedicated GPU (NVIDIA MX graphics).

Bot 14-inchers have an M.2 slot that supports fast NVMe drives.

The 15.6″ Yoga laptops are based on the Intel 10nm Ice Lake processors paired with a fast LPDDR4X memory. For more graphics-heavy workloads you can configure your machine with an optional NVIDIA MX or GTX graphics.

Display: a 4K panel option for the Intel-based 14-incher only

If you need more screen space (for better multitasking or working with two MS Office documents at the same time) and a new Yoga 7 machine, the only way to have it is to pick a 14″ device with Intel CPU – The 4K display option is available only for the Intel variants and it’s an IPS panel with 500 nits maximum brightness. A 1080p Full HD IPS display is available for the smaller laptops too.

The bigger Yoga is has a great 15.6″ 1080p IPS panel with 100% sRGB coverage (300 nits max brightness) – content creators will love it.

Connectivity and ports: no Wi-Fi 6 for the AMD-based 14-inchers

Yes, unfortunately, if you need Wi-Fi 6 connectivity you have to look for an Intel-based Yoga. As always, Bluetooth 5.0 is a standard option no matter the CPU platform. The smaller Yogas have 60.7Wh battery unit and we still don’t have info about the battery capacity of the 15.6″ Slim 7 notebook.

Buckle up, the ports selection is decent – two 3.0 (Type-A), a USB-C with Thunderbolt 3 support, an HDMI, microSD card, and a combo audio jack.
