NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 (8GB GDDR6) vs NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 (8GB GDDR5) – another RTX win over GTX

It’s time for another comparison of NVIDIA’s new Turing architecture GPU’s, and today we’re going to compare the higher tier RTX 2070 (8GB GDDR6) vs his predecessor the GTX 1070 (8GB GDDR5). For this comparison, we chose the ASUS ROG Strix GL704GW with an RTX 2070 to compete against the MSI GE63VR 7RF equipped with a GTX 1070. You can have a look at our Top Laptop Graphics Ranking to see these cards and even more.

Specs overview

Starting with the similarities between the two products – both are 256-bit cards with 8GB of memory, the only difference here is that the RTX has faster GDDR6 memory, compared to the GDDR5 in the GTX. Other similarities include their close power consumption which is at 115W and 120W respectively.

Now let’s look at their differences. Interestingly, the base clock of the RTX 2070 is a bit lower to the base clock speed fo the GTX 1070 which is 1215 MHz vs 1442 MHz. Also, the turbo

frequency is lower – 1440 MHz vs 1645 MHz. But the RTX card pulls ahead with much faster memory bandwidth rated at 448 GB/sec against 256.3 GB/sec and with more CUDA cores 2304 vs 2048 respectively. Also, the inclusion of DLSS support and the 36 RT cores for Real-Time Ray Tracing give an even greater advantage for the RTX card.

Benchmarks

And here we’re going to look at some benchmarks. The charts will show an approximate comparison between the two cards.

We can see how the two cards compete, but in the end, we have a winner and it’s from the new generation of GPU’s – the RTX 2070.

Gaming tests:

Please note that the results are slightly lower in some cases for the RTX card. Maybe future driver updates can fix this issue that we’re looking at.

Conclusion

Overall it seems we have a winner. The new RTX 2070 (8GB GDDR6) shows reasonable performance bump over its predecessor the GTX 1070 (8GB GDDR5) in NVIDIA’s higher tier graphics cards.

Where is a performance bump? Almost in all of setting GTX1070 shows higher frame rate in the tables

what is the FPS in the table is it the Max FPS or the average FPS?

It’s the average FPS. I guess that we have to wait a bit more for eventual optimizations.
