Acer Aspire 5 (A515-54G) – disassembly and upgrade options

Last year, we had the Aspire 5 (A515-52G), which turned out to be a flop by many standards. However, its successor – the A515-54G seems to tackle many of the issues of the previous generation. Let’s see what’s inside of it, though.

1. Remove the bottom plate

Accessing the internals of this notebook is nothing too difficult. You just need to remove the bottom panel, which is held in place by 11 Phillips-head screws. After you are done with that, just pop the plate with a plastic pry tool or a guitar pick.

2. Battery

As we usually recommend, before you start with taking anything off the motherboard, first unplug the battery connector. The battery itself is a 48Wh unit, that seems unchanged from two generations before.

3. Memory and storage

On the left side of the chassis is located the 2.5″ SATA slot, currently occupied by an HDD, while on the right side, you are going to find the single RAM DIMM that supports up to 16GB of DDR4 memory and an NVMe-enabled M.2 slot. Keep in mind that there are 4GB soldered to the motherboard, so the maximum memory for this device is 20GB.

4. Cooling system

This laptop’s cooling system is nothing unusual. In fact, if you take a look at the disassembly article of its predecessor – the Aspire 5 (A515-52G), Acer has borrowed the cooling module and has put it in the newer unit.
