Dual GeForce GTX 1070 (SLI) vs Single GTX 1070 gaming tests: Are SLI configurations really worth it?

sli-laptopsAlthough the new Pascal generation of NVIDIA GPUs is super powerful, there are many gamers who don’t mind the price and just want the absolute maximum. That’s why many manufacturers build models with two video cards in an SLI or CrossFire mode and since we have such a notebook in our office, MSI GT83VR Titan SLI (detailed review), we decided to show you how much performance you really get when you buy a machine with two GPUs.

First, as you can guess, the performance leap isn’t 100% and what’s more, everything depends on the specific game and its optimization. For instance, HITMAN isn’t well optimized for SLI and having two GTX 1070s doesn’t give you any advantage over the two times cheaper offerings on the market with just a single card. However, you can get really good performance boost with titles such as GTA V and Rise of the Tomb Raider, when playing at Ultra graphics settings. Here is a quick comparison:

Hitman (FHD, Max settings) Rise of the Tomb Raider (FHD, Max) GTA V (FHD, Max)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 (Acer Predator 15 G9-593) 38 fps 52 fps 52 fps
2x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070, SLI (MSI GT83VR Titan SLI) 39 fps (+3%) 104 fps (+100%) 79 fps (+52%)

The difference between 1070 and 2x 1070 in SLI is 100% at max settings in Tomb Raider. However, the big difference will come at 4K resolution when а single GTX 1070 offers around 15 fps and 2x GTX 1070s – just over 30 fps. The latter is playable and you can really enjoy it, while playing at 15 fps won’t be a pleasant experience. The bottom line is that before buying your new computer, you should check how it really handles your favorite games, instead of just reading the beautiful marketing texts. We’ve prepared many more interesting tests so stay tuned.
