First impressions of Honor 4C – an elegant octa-core smartphone at a good price

It is time to put some smartphones from the new Honor line through our tests. First, we have the Honor 4C.  The whole world is pretty much interested in it. The model is part of the lower middle price range, and considering its specifications, the price looks really good. Before we start with the thorough tests we’re going to share our first impressions of the model.

At first glance, Honor 4C’s design looks impressive. It feels like you’re holding a much more expensive smartphone. We’re testing the white version, and the color definitely contributes to the luxurious appearance. However, the nice curves, combined with the beautiful texture, and the thin silver strip make it really appealing. Besides, the grip seems stable, and there is little chance of fingerprints on the rear panel, which can be easily removed. Once you do that you’ll see the two SIM card slots, a microSD slot and the non-removable battery.

The HiSilicon Kirin 620 processor stands out among the specifications. It offers 8 Cortex-A53 cores with a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz, which should provide enough power for this class. Furthermore, the Cortex-A53 cores don’t consume a lot of energy, so we hope that this will have a positive impact on the battery life. We still don’t know exactly what that’s like, but we’ve noticed there are some power saving modes. It has a capacity of 2550 mAh – reasonable for a 5-inch model. We haven’t experienced overheating for now, but there are still tests to be done.

Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of Honor 4C, along with the design, is the software. Although it uses Android 4.4.2 KitKat, the user interface has changed that mobile platform completely, enriching it with a number of modes and functionality. In addition to the aforementioned power saving modes, we found many different gesture commands, one-hand usage modes, many pre-installed apps and even a folder full of games. We noticed the lack of an internal menu. All of the available applications are placed in a manner similar to iOS and most Lenovo models – on the home screen with no menu.

Going by first impressions, we don’t have anything special to say about the 5-inch IPS HD screen either, nor about its brightness, contrast, details or sensitivity. But the detailed analysis is still to come, so we don’t want to jump to conclusions.

The 13MP and 5MP cameras (back and front) are a pleasant surprise, given the price tag. The first couple of photos we took look pretty good (you can expect a post on the subject soon). Moreover, the camera offers an intuitive menu with lots of modes and settings that photo enthusiasts are going to love.
