First impressions of the 17-inch variant of the popular ASUS ROG GL552 – the ASUS ROG GL752

We recently got a hold of the 17-inch model ASUS ROG GL752VW – a laptop that should bring just about the same experience as the popular GL552VW but in a bigger form factor. But as we all know, sometimes the difference isn’t only in the dimensions – sometimes the 17-inch variant has better cooling capabilities or better screen quality as we experienced with the Acer Aspire V17 Nitro Black Edition compared to the 15-inch V15 Nitro Black Edition. To be sure, though, we have to do a full review but in the meantime, we’ll share our initial impressions of the laptop.

Design

Well, from a design perspective, the GL752VW isn’t much different than its 15-inch sibling. It’s build out of plastic all-around, although there are versions with aluminum lid instead of the rough plastic surface on the model we got right now. In the USA, for example, the laptop is offered only with the metallic lid while the plastic version is more widely spread in the EU.

Anyway, the laptop has a flexible lid, fingerprint magnet surface around the keyboard and including the touchpad, but feels pretty nice. The keyboard experience and the usability of the touchpad are pretty awesome, so no complaints here. There are also noticeable gaps where the keyboard tray and the base meet around the edges so dust can easily build up.

It’s also a bit hefty – around 3.52 kg for the USA version while the height of the machine is 40.29 mm so moving around with the notebook on daily basis might not be the best idea. However, the laptop also offers one extra port that the 15-inch version didn’t include – mini DisplayPort. So basically, if you are looking for a two external monitor setup, the GL752VW might be a more reasonable choice over the GL552VW since the Type-C monitors aren’t so widely spread for now.

Hardware

The laptop is offered with the latest Skylake Core i7-6700HQ quad-core CPU or with the Core i5-6300HQ CPU paired with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M (4GB GDDR5). The available RAM can go up to 32GB of DDR4-2133, but the standard configuration offers one 8GB DDR4-2133 chip that should be enough for flawless gaming experience.

Storage options vary, as always, and we are pleased to see that the M.2 SSD slot was able to make it in the 17-inch variant as well. You can configure yours with the usual 1TB HDD (up to 7200 rpm) plus another M.2 SATA SSD stick with up to 256GB. The battery also remains unchanged – 48Wh but, this time, we suspect it will struggle with the larger 17-inch panel – it will need more power to light up the larger surface. Another interesting find is that the 17-inch model features a TN panel instead of IPS, so we are yet to see how will that affect the image quality.
