Hands-on of the new Lenovo MIIX 3 (10.1-inch) convertible tablet

Lenovo Miix 3 brings to the table all the best qualities of laptops and combines them with all the best features of tablets. The device is affordable, priced around €350. The tablet offers a quad-core Intel Z3735F CPU, Intel HD Graphics (Bay Trail) GPU and 2 gigs of ram. Thin and relatively light, it is easy to use, and even though Miix 3 is made of plastic, it has a premium feel.

Design

In Lenovo Miix 3’s box you will find the tablet itself, along with the docking station, charger and manuals.

The device has a 10.1-inch screen and measures at 9.3mm thick and 543 grams. Its body is made of plastic but that doesn’t make it feel cheap. Quite the opposite – it feels and looks premium. There aren’t any buttons on the front, which is only populated by the 2-megapixel camera. At the back you will find the Lenovo logo along with the Windows 8 and Intel Inside strikers. The power button and the volume rocker are placed on the right, and on the left, we see the speaker and the slots for the memory card, HDMI and USB 2.0 cables as well as the audio jack. There is only a microphone on the top, while the port to connect to the docking station is on the bottom.

The keybord case has a rubber-coated surface with the Lenovo logo inscribed on it. You can fold it backwards to use Miix 3 as a tablet even when it is docked to the station, or you can bend the top portion at the centre and use it as a stand for the tablet. The keyboard looks and feels good, typing isn’t unnecessarily difficult. The trackpad could use some improvement, but we can say that it gets the job done. Gestures have been implemented to help you do things more quickly and easily.

Hardware

intel-atomEven though the device doesn’t have a great CPU or GPU, its performance is sufficient for multimedia usage. Lenovo Miix 3 is powered by an Intel Atom Z3735F quad-core processor, clocked at 1.33 – 1.83GHz. It is accompanied by Intel HD Graphics (Bay Trail) GPU and 2 gigs of ram. The hybrid didn’t seem to have any problem dealing with multitasking and going through the user interface, nor did it lag while browsing the web and watching videos. We will run tests and benchmarks and share its resultst and how they stack up to similar competing devices.

Lenovo Miix 3’s screen is a 10.1-inch IPS display with a resolution of up to FHD (1920 × 1200 pixels). The color reproduction is quite accurate, viewing angles are high, and the images are sharp. However, due to screen reflections, the display does have its fair share of struggle when it comes to daylight usage.

Software

Lenovo Miix 3 runs 32-bit Windows 8.1 with Bing. This means that you get the Bing Smart Search function, available only in Windows 8.1, which aims to help you work more quickly. This version of Windows does not differ in anything from the ones installed on computers and laptops. You can install and work with Word, Excel, Chrome, Skype and all the other applications that run on Windows. The system optimization proves to be good enough so that the applications run smoothly.
