Top 5 reasons to BUY or NOT to buy the HP ProBook 450 G8

HP’s business division has been on fire, with it creating some of the best and most secure notebooks on the market. With the ProBook 450 G8, HP is trying to create a contender for the best and most affordable business notebook on the market right now.

What previously has held back ProBook devices was their weak and underpowered U-series processors from Intel. For this generation, HP has changed that and introduced Tiger Lake, with options going up to the i7-1165G7 along with the Iris Xe Graphics that are some of the best iGPUs (plus some dedicated options from NVIDIA).

Today we are presenting you with LaptopMedia’s Top 5 picks about the HP ProBook 450 G8.

HP ProBook 450 G8: Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the HP ProBook 450 G8

1. The Design and build quality

Starting off from the exterior, the device has a relatively thick profile for a business device, measuring 19.8mm at the thickest and the weight being dropped from 2.00 kg to 1.74 kg, which is quite an improvement. The body is a combination of metal and plastic, with aluminum being used for the lid and plastic for everywhere else. The body is a bit twisty, but the design is what you would expect from a business notebook, with only a subtle debossed HP logo in the center.

2. The Upgradeability

The laptop is quite good in terms of upgradability, with both the RAM and storage being accessible for future expansion. There are two SODIMM slots for RAM replacement, that can fit up to 32GB of DDR4 memory in dual-channel mode. In terms of storage, there is one M.2 slot for NVMe drives.

If it’s your first time disassembling a laptop, you can go and watch our detailed teardown video. In it, you can find all the necessary steps in order to safely get access to the RAM and storage slots.

3. The Battery life

The relatively small 45Wh battery on the ProBook 450 G8 lasts for 9 hours and 39 minutes of Web browsing and 7 hours and 55 minutes of video playback. The way we do our tests is with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with. You can see the new ProBook 450 G8 against the old ProBook 450 G7.

4. The I/O and features

The I/O here is quite stacked with the left side getting a USB Type-A port, an RJ-45 port, and a security lock slot. On the right, you get the charging plug, a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen 1) port with Power Delivery and DisplayPort 1.4 capabilities, two other USB Type-A ports, an HDMI 1.4b connector, an audio jack, and a MicroSD card reader. Being a business notebook, it comes with some great features such as Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 support. On the hardware front, you have a fingerprint reader, a backlit keyboard, and an HD webcam.

1 reason NOT to buy the HP ProBook 450 G8

1. The Display

The display options consist of two panels, with the base model offering an HD TN screen, which we would advise you to skip. The proper option is a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS panel with comfortable viewing angles and a good contrast ratio. Additionally, it doesn’t use PWM to adjust its brightness at any level, making it safe for prolonged use. The color coverage and color accuracy, however, are quite poor, with the panel only covering 53% of the sRGB color gamut.

Moving to the color accuracy, we tested it using the 24 most commonly used colors. Below you can see the results both with the factory settings (left) and with our Design and Gaming profile (right).
