ASUS ZenBook Flip 15 UX562 review – a well-designed product for artists that has a great multitasking enhancement

Today, we are going to present to you a laptop that might be a decent upgrade to a very strong offering from ASUS that got our Editor’s choice award a while ago. The new model is called the ZenBook Flip 15 UX562 and looks like a minor update in terms of the hardware it packs. Instead of the Kaby Lake R ULV CPUs equipped on the previous model, this one features the Whiskey Lake series, which offer slightly higher Turbo clocks and a better optimization, which ultimately results in improved battery life.

Additionally, you can get the device with a GTX 1050 Max-Q and GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q in some iterations. This will certainly provide you with a lot more graphical power, should you ever need it. Let’s not forget that this laptop competes in a segment of the market that features a lot of strong devices. Especially, from Lenovo, which flooded the world with its Yoga C-series.

#CommissionsEarned

What’s in the box?

It is good to see that more manufacturers nowadays include a stylus inside the packaging of their devices. Additionally, there is a 120W power adapter (no Type-C charging, though). Moreover, you receive a protective sleeve (optional).

Design and construction

First of all, let’s mention the “Gun Grey” color of this notebook, which makes it look absolutely stunning. We imagine that a certain Agent 007 would pick this device for the job. Nevertheless, what is more, important is that most of its body is made out of aluminum. In terms of size, there is a marginal improvement over the predecessor, with the device becoming 0.4mm thinner (at 20.9mm) and 100 grams lighter (at 1.90kg). Surely enough, it is still pretty thick and bulky for a convertible and doesn’t provide the most comfortable experience, should you prefer one-handed use. But it is still a step in the right direction.

Expectedly, the lid cannot be opened with a single hand. Instead, the hinge provides a high amount of resistance, so you can use the device more easily in different positions. We have to mention that while most of the surface is matte, the backside of the device has a glossy finish. Additionally, the ZenBook Flip 15 UX562 features the ErgoLift mechanism, embedded into the 360-degree hinge. Thus, it has a lot more breathing space than the ZenBook Flip 15 UX561.

Now, let’s move to the base and observe what is new about it. First, we have to mention the chamfered edges around it, which in some cases may feel a bit too sharp on your wrists. Then, there is the keyboard that is largely unchanged from the previous model – it has a decent travel, rather clicky feedback, and a backlight. Additionally, you will find a NumberPad segment, which has a smaller “0” key and a delete key squished between it and the tiny second enter button.

Next thing on the list – the ScreenPad. It is huge in size, especially compared to what traditionally touchpads look on Windows laptops. Moreover, it has all of the goodies, that the ScreenPad offers on the ZenBook 15 UX534. You can use it as a second screen, a shortcut for apps, or even as your handy translator from finger to digital language.

On the bottom plate, you can find the speaker cut-outs, as well as the ventilation grills. Hot air on this model is directed directly at the bottom part of the lid. We hope that doesn’t damage the display if you are a frequent gamer or a power graphics user.

Ports

On the left side, there is an SD card reader, as well as a USB Type-A 2.0 port. This is also where you are going to find the power button, which is easy to distinguish when not looking at it, and produces a satisfying click when you press it. Back to the point – on the right side is where you can see the power plug. It is followed by an HDMI connector, a USB Type-A 3.1 (Gen. 1) port, an audio combo jack, and a USB Type-C 3.1 (Gen. 1) port.

Disassembly, upgrade options and maintenance

There are 11 Torx-head screws that hold the bottom plate to the chassis. Should you remove it, you will have access to the internals of this notebook. However, after you are done unscrewing around, you need to pry the panel with a plastic tool. Don’t be afraid to use force, but be patient.

Interestingly, there is only one heat pipe cooling both the CPU and the GPU. In contrast to the ZenBook Flip 15 UX561, which had two – that go to separate fans. Again, there are two fans here, but they cool the same heat pipe, essentially. Here, you can also see the M.2 PCIe x4 drive, just below the CPU.

Battery-wise, there is a 71Wh unit. It is fairly big, especially when you consider the ULV processor inside.

Display quality

ASUS ZenBook Flip 15 UX562 in the configuration we tested has a Full HD IPS touchscreen panel with a model number BOE NV156FHM-N63 (BOE07D8) – the same one, seen on the ZenBook 15 UX534. Its diagonal is 15.6″ (39.62 cm), and the resolution 1920 х 1080 pixels. The screen ratio is 16:9, and we are looking at a pixel density of – 142 ppi, and a pitch of 0.18 х 0.18 mm. The screen turns into Retina when viewed at distance equal to or greater than 60cm (24″) (from this distance one’s eye stops differentiating the separate pixels, and it is normal for looking at a laptop).

It has comfortable viewing angles. We offer images at 45° to evaluate image quality.

The measured maximum brightness of 208 nits in the middle of the screen and 229 nits as an average for the whole area, with a maximum deviation of 33%, which is unacceptable. The Correlated Color Temperature on a white screen is 6300K – slightly warmer than the optimal for the sRGB standard of 6500K. The average color temperature through the grey scale before profiling is also 6300K.
In the illustration below you can see how the display performs from a uniformity perspective. In other words, the leakage of light from the light source.

Values of dE2000 over 4.0 should not occur, and this parameter is one of the first you should check if you intend to use the laptop for color-sensitive work. The contrast ratio is good – 930:1.

To make sure we are on the same page, we would like to give you a little introduction to the sRGB color gamut and the Adobe RGB. To start, there’s the CIE 1976 Uniform Chromaticity Diagram that represents the visible specter of colors by the human eye, giving you a better perception of the color gamut coverage and the color accuracy.

Inside the black triangle, you will see the standard color gamut (sRGB) that is being used by millions of people in HDTV and on the web. As for the Adobe RGB, this is used in professional cameras, monitors, etc for printing. Basically, colors inside the black triangle are used by everyone and this is the essential part of the color quality and color accuracy of a mainstream notebook.

Still, we’ve included other color spaces like the famous DCI-P3 standard used by movie studios, as well as the digital UHD Rec.2020 standard. Rec.2020, however, is still a thing of the future and it’s difficult for today’s displays to cover that well. We’ve also included the so-called Michael Pointer gamut, or Pointer’s gamut, which represents the colors that naturally occur around us every day.

The yellow dotted line shows ASUS ZenBook Flip 15 UX562’s color gamut coverage.

Its display covers 91% of the sRGB/ITU-R BT.709 (web/HDTV standard) in CIE1976.

We also measured the color gamut coverage of the ScreenPad. It covers 92% of sRGB, which is not too shabby.

Our “Design and Gaming” profile delivers optimal color temperature (6500K) at 140 cd/m2 luminance and sRGB gamma mode.

We tested the accuracy of the display with 24 commonly used colors like light and dark human skin, blue sky, green grass, orange, etc. You can check out the results at factory condition and also, with the “Design and Gaming” profile.

Below you can compare the scores of ASUS ZenBook Flip 15 UX562 with the default settings (left), and with the “Gaming and Web design” profile (right).

The next figure shows how well the display is able to reproduce really dark parts of an image, which is essential when watching movies or playing games in low ambient light.

The left side of the image represents the display with stock settings, while the right one is with the “Gaming and Web Design” profile activated. On the horizontal axis, you will find the grayscale and on the vertical axis – the luminance of the display. On the two graphs below you can easily check for yourself how your display handles the darkest nuances but keep in mind that this also depends on the settings of your current display, the calibration, the viewing angle, and the surrounding light conditions.

Response time (Gaming capabilities)

We test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “black-to-white” and “white-to-black” method from 10% to 90% and vice versa.

We recorded Fall Time + Rise Time = 34 ms.

PWM (Screen flickering)

Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is an easy way to control monitor brightness. When you lower the brightness, the light intensity of the backlight is not lowered, but instead turned off and on by the electronics with a frequency indistinguishable to the human eye. In these light impulses, the light/no-light time ratio varies, while brightness remains unchanged, which is harmful to your eyes. You can read more about that in our dedicated article on PWM.

ASUS ZenBook Flip 15 UX562’s display is free of flickerings, which means it doesn’t use PWM to adjust its brightness level. This, in turn, makes it comfortable for long work periods, by not harming your eyes in this aspect.

Blue light emissions

Installing our Health-Guard profile not only eliminates PWM but also reduces the harmful Blue Light emissions while keeping the colors of the screen perceptually accurate. If you’re not familiar with the Blue light, the TL;DR version is – emissions that negatively affect your eyes, skin and your whole body. You can find more information about that in our dedicated article on Blue Light.

Conclusion

ASUS ZenBook Flip 15 UX562’s IPS panel is touch-sensitive, has a Full HD resolution and comfortable viewing angles. Its advantages include a wide color coverage of 91% of sRGB and a lack of PWM for brightness adjustment. On the downside, our unit had an unacceptably high unevenness in terms of Luminance across the screen’s surface.

Temperatures and comfort

Max CPU load

In this test we use 100% on the CPU cores, monitoring their frequencies and chip temperature. The first column shows a computer’s reaction to a short load (2-10 seconds), the second column simulates a serious task (between 15 and 30 seconds), and the third column is a good indicator of how good the laptop is for long loads such as video rendering.

This explains perfectly, why the ZenBook Flip 15 UX562 was able to achieve these results with the Core i5-8565U. Not only the cooling is able to handle it, but it also gives the laptop the opportunity to run it at a higher power limit. At the end, we measured 28W on the processor, up from the 15W TDP usually set on this device.

Real-life gaming

ASUS ZenBook Pro 14 UX4801441 MHz @ 80°C1358 MHz @ 80°C

Apparently, this GPU is placed on laptops that lack decent cooling solutions. As you can see, the temperature of all members of this chart is posting temperatures at or above 80C.

Gaming comfort

The laptop is not too loud when playing games, but it can become quite warm on the outside. Also, expectedly, the bottom part of the display is getting a lot of that heat, as well.

Verdict

As we said in the beginning, the ZenBook Flip 15 UX562 is incredibly similar to its predecessor. However, one of the biggest advantages is its performance. Because of the high power limit, made possible by the 120W power adapter and the decent CPU cooling. Not only did it post great scores in synthetic benchmarks, but it also is able to sustain quite a high frequency of the Core i5-8265U during the 15-minute stress test.

Of course, not everything is performance here. After all, we are talking about a product that is most appealing to artists or designers. With that said, we just can’t miss mentioning the ScreenPad. You can use it both as a regular touchpad and as a second touch-enabled display. As you can imagine, it provides you with better multitasking capabilities, as well as can act as an input device. It offers handwriting recognition, a dedicated Spreadsheet, and Docs apps, as well as a special calculator mode.

This is petty, given the fact that this device relies heavily on its display.

Another strong point in this notebook is its battery life. We were able to extract more than 11 hours and a half of Web browsing and around 18 hours of video playback. This is exceptional.

Of course, there are some downsides to the model. Apart from the uneven luminance levels, there is a lack of memory upgrades. Everything is soldered to the motherboard. On the bright side, there is still an M.2 slot for PCIe x4 SSDs.

Additionally, the lid is kind of wobbly, so you won’t be very comfortable when using the touchscreen in an upright position. Other than that, the touch sensitivity and Pen support are decent.

Generally, if it wasn’t for the Luminance issues, we would recommend it with two hands. However, it is one of the most important things for Web designers. Although, if you are willing to risk, or you don’t care about that, the ZenBook Flip 15 UX562 is a great deal.

Pros

  • Beautiful design with narrow bezels and an ErgoLift hinge
  • Adequate screen with 91% sRGB coverage and no harmful flickering (Innolux N156HCE-EN1 (CMN15E8)
  • Comfortable keyboard and exceptional ScreenPad
  • The display doesn’t use PWM to adjust its brightness levels
  • Supports PCIe x4 SSDs and has an SD card reader
  • Performance is way above average

Cons

  • Tends to get quite warm when playing games
  • Uneven Luminance is a big blow to the usability from a designer’s stand point
  • Cannot upgrade memory, as the chips are soldered to the motherboard
  • Lacks a Thunderbolt support
