[Comparison] Dell XPS 13 9300 (2020) vs Dell XPS 13 7390 (2019) – what’s changed?

As we already informed you, Dell introduced the all-new XPS 13 9300 (2020) notebooks. The new ones will co-exist with the XPS 13 7390 (2019). The 9300 series look like a reasonable upgrade and in this article we will explain to you the difference between those two models.

1. The hardware

The XPS 13 9300 models will feature the latest 10th gen Intel Ice Lake CPUs. That means refined and balanced 10nm processors with the latest and fast Intel Iris graphics up to 64 EUs in the G7 model. The 6-core CPU option (Core i7-10710U) is available for the XPS 13 7390 only, so if you need more CPU power the 2019 variant is the way to go.

From our previous CPU comparisons, we can remind you, that Intel UHD G1 is 25% faster than UHD 620 and Intel Iris G7 is 44% faster than UHD 630. The Intel Iris G7 is faster than AMD RX Vega 8 /10 too because even the smaller G4 model has the lead when compared to the AMD integrated rivals.

The i3-1005G1 is e decent entry-level CPU that features UHD G1. You can have a look at our article about its performance against a Whiskey Lake i3. The i5-1035G1 is the sweet spot – it has a good price/performance ratio combined with decent graphics. The top-end CPU option is i7-1065G7 which offers good iGPU and snappy CPU performance.

The Ice Lake CPUs dissipate less heat than the previous generation CPUs so you can expect (probably) more cooler and quieter devices. Those CPUs can be combined with a fast and efficient LPDDR4X-3733 memory, up to 32GB RAM, and an NVMe drive up to 2TB (which as our colleagues from Notebookcheck have shown on the photo below, isn’t soldered).

2. The display options

The most visible difference in XPS 13 9300 is the screen – 16:10 aspect ratio and the panel is stretched to 13.4″. That makes the overall design really clean because the “chin” below the panel isn’t that noticeable, the Dell logo beneath the panel is missing, and the bezels are thin. The 720p webcam with IR functionality is placed above the display. The new panel options (previously used in XPS 13 7390 2-in-1) will offer a bigger viewing space for work.

There are three screen options – two 1200p variants (with 100% sRGB coverage) and a UHD+ model (with HDR 400 support and a 90% DCI-P3 coverage). The touchscreen version will feature a Gorilla Glass 6 which will add extra protection.

The Dell XPS 13 7390 screen options offer pleasant experience too like good viewing angles, excellent contrast ratio, and 94% sRGB coverage (you can find more info about the Dell XPS 13 7390 screen and specs in our detailed in-depth review here).

3. Keyboard and touchpad

The keyboard is redesigned (the key travel is reduced from 1.3mm to 1.0mm) – it’s wider than the 7390 model and that means larger keycaps which will lead to a more comfortable typing experience, probably.

The touchpad is 17% larger (with glass surface again) – the extra space will add more comfort to your daily experience.

4. Other stuff

The design of the XPS 13 9300 is a bit changed than the XPS 13 7390 one thanks to some new touches here and there.

The weight is reduced and the new models feature smaller form factor. The chassis and the lid are made of aluminum, and we have two color options – black and white. The hinge has a new design and it’s hidden behind the body and the panel – you can open the lid with one hand. Ports-wise, the XPS 13 9300 is a bit downgraded when compared to the 2019 model – it lacks an additional USB-C port and the Noble Lock. Still, two USB-C ports are available alongside Thunderbolt 3 support, Bluetooth 5.0, a 2×2 Killer Wi-Fi 6, a 3.5-mm audio jack, and a microSD card reader – not bad at all.

The speakers are updated too – XPS 13 9300 will have more powerful 2W speakers while the XPS 7390 features less-powerful 1W pair of speakers.

The Dell XPS 13 9300 (2020) will hit the stores on January 7th, 2020 in some selected countries (FR DE SW). The other regions will get it from February 2020.

Why was the USB type 3 charging port dropped?

Correction: Why was the USB type C charging port dropped reducing the number of type C ports?

Because realistically you don’t need 3 type-c ports.
I own type-c laptops since 2018 and I can tell you all you basically need is one Thunderbolt 3 type-c port that is able to charge your laptop so you can use one dock which has all the keyboard, mouse, monitors, charger, etc peripherals and always connect just one cable.
I can’t imagine anyone using 3 type C ports all with sticking dock and port replicators out. Just ugly.
