Intel Core i5-1035G1 vs i7-8565U – the new CPU has a much better price/performance ratio

The modern Core i5 CPUs have the same core count as some of the i7s – 4 cores and 8 threads. We have a fresh replenishment in our CPU ranks – the Core i5-1035G1. It is a new Ice Lake-based CPU. Let’s see if the new one can stand its ground against i7-8565U – a powerful Whiskey Lake CPU from 2018.

Both processors have different iGPUs and we will compare the graphics performance too.

Quick Specs

Let’s start with one of the most important things – the price. We are talking about bulk prices here (for 1000 units) – $297.00 for the i5-1035G1 and $409.00 for i7-8565U. Wow, that’s $112 more (or 38%) for the i7-8565U than i5-1035G1.
As for the specs – our contenders are 4-core 8-thread CPUs. The TDP levels are the same for both. The Intel Core i5-1035G1 has lower base and boost frequencies compared to i7-8565U (1.00 GHz – 3.60 GHz vs 1.80 GHz – 4.60 GHz). The Ice lake CPU has a smaller cache size – 6MB to 8MB. When it comes to memory frequencies the newer CPU is taking the lead over the Whiskey Lake one – DDR4-3200, LPDDR4-3733 to DDR4-2400, LPDDR3-2133.

The Core i5-1035G1 is equipped with the newer Intel UHD G1 and the i7-8565U has the “good old” UHD 620.

CPU Benchmarks

The i7-8565U still has much to offer – a 13% better score here.

Results are from the Cinebench 20 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)

Results are from our Photoshop benchmark test (the lower the score, the better)

GPU Benchmarks

Thanks to the Intel UHD G1, the i5-1035G1 has a 20% better GPU score in 3DMark FireStrike than i7-8565U with UHD 620.

Results are from the 3DMark: Time Spy (Graphics) benchmark (higher the score, the better)

Results are from the 3DMark: Fire Strike (Graphics) benchmark (higher the score, the better)

Results are from the Unigine Superposition benchmark (higher the score, the better)

Verdict

Ok, the i7-8565U is a fast CPU but i5-1035G1 isn’t that far away in terms of CPU power. On the other side, Intel UHD G1 is 20% faster when compared to UHD 620. If we add the prices in the mix the i5-1035G1 seems like a better deal – for 38% lower price you can have a decent CPU with a capable iGPU. If you play light games from time to time the UHD G1 will be faster than UHD 620. The two rivals offer good everyday performance no matter the stress.

It is hard for us to recommend the i7-8565U over i5-1035G1 – 38% more expensive, faster CPU performance (but not much), and it has slower integrated graphics. Nope, the Ice Lake CPU has a much better price/performance ratio.
