Intel Core i7-10750H vs Core i7-8750H – the new one isn’t that far ahead

Do you remember the Intel Core i7-8750H? This Coffee Lake CPU has debuted more than 2 years ago and it was the successor of the Intel Core i7-7700HQ. That was a hell of an upgrade – additional 2 cores and 4 threads, a 3MB bigger cache size, higher supported memory frequencies, and higher base and boost clocks.

Not bad at all, the Intel Core i7-8750H offers a big performance improvement compared to the previous-gen predecessor. Mainly because of the added CPU cores, there is a big leap between Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake.

A year after that, we saw the refreshed Coffe Lake (HR) CPUs, and logically, the Intel Core i7-9750H was a refreshed version of the Core i7-8750H. But Intel has added a pinch of salt (in a good way) in the specs of the i7-9750H – a further 3MB increase in cache size (from 9MB to 12MB) which have led to performance improvement in some games and CPU-intensive apps. No matter what, even today, the Intel Core i7-8750H is still a decent CPU and yes, the Core i7-9750H is faster but the difference between them isn’t huge.

Now, we have the Intel Core i7-10750H which is a Comet Lake-H CPU but apart from its new name, this is essentially a refresh of the Core i7-9750H (Coffee Lake-HR, 14nm++ tech) and it uses a 14nm+++ tech process. It has a higher Turbo Boost clock and it takes advantage of the Intel Thermal Velocity Boost that can take some cores up to 5.00 GHz if there is enough thermal room for it (the CPU temp must be below 70°C). In short, we have a higher boost and higher supported memory frequencies. That doesn’t sound very inspiring for a “new” product.

That’s why, in today’s comparison, we are going to compare the Intel Core i7-10750H and the Core i7-8750H, and we wanted to see how much work Intel has done for a bit more than two years.


Quick Specs

As you may already know, these are 6-core chips with 12 threads. The newer Intel Core i7-10750H has the lead when it comes to base and boost clocks – 2.60 GHz- 4.80 (5.00) GHz to 2.20 GHz – 4.10 GHz. The cache size of the Intel Core i7-10750H is 12MB while the i7-8750H has 9MB of cache. The TDP levels are the same – 45W (and 35W for TDP-down value). The Comet Lake-H CPU supports DDR4-2933 and we have DDR4-2666, LPDDR3-2133 for the pre-predecessor. The Intel UHD 630 is the iGPU for both CPUs so the integrated video card performance should be almost identical.

CPU Benchmarks

Nothing spectacular, the Intel Core i7-8750H is 16% slower than the Core i7-10750H, possibly because of the bigger cache size and the higher boost clock.


Verdict

Is there a problem that is related to the Intel Core i7-10750H? Maybe, but the problem isn’t the Core i7-8750H – it’s the i7-9750H. The latter is almost the same CPU as the new Comet Lake-H chip which is only a tad faster than its predecessor. It’s a bit hard to call the Intel Core i7-10750H “a new product” because there isn’t much of a difference compared to the Core i7-9750H in terms of overall performance.

If you have a laptop with the Intel Core i7-8750H there is almost no point to upgrade to something with the i7-10750H. It’s still a 14nm CPU, it has the same core and thread count, and despite being called a Comet Lake-H processor, let’s be honest – it’s a refreshed version of the good “old” Coffee Lake-HR Intel Core i7-9750H. If you want to buy an Intel-based laptop, you can have a look for deals with Intel Core i7-9750H-based machines (or even with Core i7-8750H), or if you can’t find any and you need a good balance between price and performance, the i7-10750H isn’t that bad considering the price of the bigger Intel Core i9 CPUs.

Don’t forget the fact that the mobile AMD Zen 2 processors are already available and you can get a laptop with the AMD Ryzen 5 4600H for a lower price than the i7-10750H. This AMD CPU has the same number of cores and threads as the i7-10750H but it offers similar or even better performance at a lower price (in most cases).
