Exynos 8890 and Mali-T880 vs Snapdragon 820 and Adreno 530 – specs, benchmarks and temperatures

ex1

Not long ago we acquainted you with our review of LG G5, and this was the first device with Snapdragon 820 that we tested. Qualcomm’s high-end CPU can be found in several other leading devices and the new HTC 10 is one example. That is why we are interested to compare Snapdragon 820 and Exynos 8890, as the latter is used in Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. This article juxtaposes their specs, benchmark results (determining GPU performance) and temperatures. If you are interested in the purchase of either device, you can click on the following links:

Exynos 8890

Exynos 8890 is Samsung’s latest mobile CPU that can be found in Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. It has been manufactured through a 14 nm FinFET technological process and features four Cortex-A53 cores, ticking at 1.59 GHz, plus two other considerably more powerful Exynos M1 cores whose frequency can reach up to 2.6 GHz. According to Samsung, Exynos 8890 provides up to 30% higher performance and up to 10% better energy efficiency, when compared to its predecessor – Exynos 7 Octa 7420. The current chip supports LTE Cat 12/13 with download speed up to 600 Mbps (Cat 12), and upload speed up to 150 Mbps (Cat 13). Additionally, there is an integrated Mali-T880MP12 GPU.

Snapdragon 820

Snapdragon 820 is Qualcomm’s top-notch CPU for 2016. It is a 64-bit 14 nm mobile CPU. According to the manufacturer, CPU performance is twice as high as that of Snapdragon 810. Also, the chip features four Kryo cores – two ticking at 2.15 GHz and other two – at 1.6 GHz. Furthermore, there is an update of the GPU – the new Adreno 530 brings 40% better GPU performance (when compared to Adreno 430). Snapdragon 820 also boasts LTE Cat 12/13 support with download speed up to 600 Mbps (Cat 12), and upload speed up to 150 Mbps (Cat 13). This is 33% better than Snapdragon 810. Additionally, the specs are supplemented by Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi 802.11ac 2×2 MU-MIMO, support of 4K screens, up to 25MP cameras and 4K video recording. Also available are Quick Charge™ 3.0 and WiPower for quick and wireless charging.

Benchmark results

We compared the two models in 8 benchmark tests in which we checked CPU (first 4 tests) and GPU (the latter 4 tests) performance. The table below displays the results.

Temperatures

Apart from performance, we also tested the two chips for potential overheating issues with the help of the Epic Citadel app. The latter allows us to simulate several hours of gaming. No overheating was observed in either of the phones. However, Galaxy S7 Edge and its Exynos 8890 made a good impression because the smartphone remained really cool even after continuous workload. The two images below present the temperatures we measured in three different sections of the two phones.
