First impressions of Honor 4X – an affordable and elegant phablet

Honor 4X is next in line for a review. We already have the device in our lab, so we can begin with the tests. Before we show you the results, we’ve prepared a first impressions post on the 5.5-inch smartphone.

Since we first opened the box, we noticed the strong resemblance with Honor 4C. That includes the button and camera placement, design, and the nice texture on the back that will make it virtually impossible to leave greasy fingerprints. The phone is 8.7 mm thick and weighs 165 grams – good parameters for a 5.5-inch phablet, not to mention they make the device comfortable to grip. The rear panel can be easily removed. The interior is a lot like Honor 4C’s – two microSIM card slots, plus an additional one for a microSD card, which you’ll probably need since there’s only 8GB of internal memory.

Looking under the lid, you won’t miss the huge 3000 mAh battery. Our tests are still in the pipeline, but we expect high durability. Judging by the short pre-test period of usage, we were happy with the battery life. It will probably be one of the aces up Honor 4X’s sleeve.

The well-known Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 (4-core, 1.20GHz, Cortex-A53) is in charge of performance. Seeing it in this price range is nothing out of the ordinary nowadays. We’re still positive about it, because of the smooth operation it delivers, and also because of its the energy efficiency. The CPU is accompanied by an Adreno 306 GPU and 2GB of RAM.

Although the smartphone runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS, the software is one of its strongest features (if not the strongest). The Huawei’s user interface has a lot of pre-installed applications along with many modes and functionality options to offer, locate in the settings menu. That includes gesture or movement management like, for example, starting an app by drawing a specific letter on the locked screen. That’s a small part of the available software extras, which we’ll explore in our upcoming review.

If you think there is nothing more to require from an affordable 5.5-inch phablet with good design, rich software capabilities, long battery life and reasonable performance, Honor 4X will surprise you with a 13MP rear camera. It features many modes and a long list of settings. Additionally, it can film Full HD video. We’ll be posting some sample photos soon, and a thorough camera analysis will be included in the detailed review.
