First impressions of Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus – metal construction, Full HD screen and Snapdragon 616

Lenovo officially revealed the Vibe K5 Plus in the end of February during the MWC 2016 event and now, the device is in our hands and we’re working on the full review. However, before we’re finished, we’d like to share our first impressions of it.

Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus is a mid-range device but unlike most other competing models, the phone boasts a metal back panel making it a bit more premium. The surface is smooth and doesn’t easily attract fingerprints and the device measures at 8 mm thickness and weighs 142 grams, which along with the 5-inch display make the phone comfortable to hold and use with one hand. You can easily remove the rear cover in order to reach the two micro-SIM and one microSD card slot.

Another impressive feature of the phone is the Full HD resolution of the screen which isn’t so common in the mid-range segment of the market. In other words, you’ll be able to enjoy detailed content with pixel density of 441 ppi. Also, in the settings menu, you’ll find a couple of screen modes and setting that help you adjust color temperature and saturation.

Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus sports Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 616 SoC which is an improved version of the well-known Snapdragon 615. The mobile chip boasts eight Cortex-A53 cores separated into two clusters. The first one has four cores clocked at 1.2GHz while the operating frequency of the second one is 1.5GHz. Anyway, the phone has 2GB of RAM and so far, we haven’t experienced any lags. However, we’re yet to test out how the SoC performs in our benchmark tests.

Lenovo often adds a lot of additional software features to their models but this isn’t quite the case with the Vibe K5 Plus. The phone runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop and feels a bit different than other Lenovo handsets. These changes are most noticeable in the drop-down and settings menus. Even though there aren’t a lot of additional features we found a wide variety of pre-installed apps.

Moving on to the camera where settings are scarce here as well, although, there are a couple of manual settings for adjusting white balance, ISO, etc. We’re soon going to share an article with a couple of sample photos that we took with the 13MP rear shooter so keep in touch. We’re also eager to test out the battery life of the phone since we have our doubts about its durability, considering the powerful hardware.
